308 Win 600yd group ?

How bout 10 shots at 600 , are ya still .5 Moa ?
I’d like to see those easy targets and not just a wallet pop,
I’ve shot quite a bit of 600 with my 308 my best is around 4 inches 91 points
10 shots would be a lot harder, but that’s not what he asked. I think good 20 shot precision would be .75 moa, or a bit less, in truly benign conditions.
On a good day, I can hold approximately 1 moa, at 1/2 mile, with a sling and iron sights, for 10 shots, I’m pretty sure the rifle is capable of significantly better.

You need to shoot on my primary range (Diggle in northern England). Last Saturday's F match was won in Open with 84.5v (184.5x in US scoring) and only 4 competitors in that class broke 80. Highest score of the day was 93.3v from the F/TR winner who was 10 full points clear of the second place man. (Don't ask me how - I wasn't there having reacted to the weather forecast.)

Although this was an exceptionally windy day, 600 yard possibles are unusual in any season on this range such is the range of wind directions and strengths, their changing between shots and the time intervals between shots that pairs shooting puts into the process. The upside to this situation is it makes the shooting much interesting than having 20 people scoring 100s and loads of V countbacks / ties. The downside is that nearly all the top half dozen nowadays are shooting 284, Shehane, SAUMs, and WSMs and one or two very hot 6.5 Creedmoors at a distance where I'd prefer to see people with 6.5X47s and suchlike have a chance of a top three place. Hardly anybody now shoots sixes in our 600 yard matches unless it's forecast to be an unusually quiet day.

I've heard about the winds at Diggle. Fortunately, even the [relatively] mild wind conditions at the ranges where I currently most often shoot have cured me of any severe masochistic tendencies. ;)

Loaded a few 175 SMK's over RE15 today . Had great accuracy and low ES around 2550 fps . Going to tune a little more and try to shoot 600 tomorrow . I loaded up to 2670 but was getting pressure signs .

the mil was up close to 2700 with 175/rl15 in bolts for a while. if you have pressure at 2670 , look around 2610/2620, and the 2550 is a good spot if the 2610 does not work.

I own no such thing. I do shoot 600/1000 br, but not with a 308 win and never with a savage 10. just because you can't do something, does not mean it cannot be done. I guess I should have got my target pullers name and phone number, ben avery 600 Thursday practice.
I bet you got a savage 6.5 creedmoore that shoots 2 inches at 1000 too.

Im just kidding with you...

My 308 f-open rifle will shoot about 2" consistently for 5 shots at 600 yards with what I like to describe as a poorly tuned load. I've never seen better than 200-17x with it. Some day I should do load development the right way...

I shoot it because I can shoot draggy bullets to help me learn to make real wind calls. It's a hoot, but more challenging. By changing bullets, I can make it shoot inside my Dasher, but not by much.

IMHO ; To answer the OP's question , I would think that 60 - 75% of ten to twenty rounds in the 10 - ring would be exceptional , as I've seen folks have trouble keeping rounds inside the 9 - ring with custom built FTR guns on any given day .... The question was kind of generic , and we are all putting out answers like the OP is a hard-core HM competitor . A little realism goes a long way , sometimes .

some people get so wrapped up in what THEY THINK,
they do not read the fine print
"My question is what are realistic groups at 600yds with a 308 ? Not the once in awhile 3 shot amazing group but the average 5 shot groups shooting in good conditions .

nowhere does he mention 10 nor 20 shot strings.

To answer the OP's question... I think 1/2 MOA is what the rifle would be able to achieve. GAP uses trued Remington actions and guarantee 1/2 MOA.. So if George thinks it doable. That seems like a likely realistic goal for the OP... Now back to the pointless brickering..

Stock Rem 700 5R here - with 175 ELD-M seated 20 off the lands and N540, I'm ~4" @ 600 yards on avg in wind. On low wind days I'll generally get 2 or 3 very close for every 1 "flier", opening it up a bit. 10-shot groups almost always <1MOA.

With the right rifle & ammo combo, I would expect 1/2 MOA (3") groups on a good day if you are good at reading wind. If you're at 1 MOA your are looking at a 6" group and so on and so on.

I have a 600yd range at home that we have family & friends matches . I bought a 700 308 Varmint and put it in a good stock and replaced the trigger . Rifle shoots great out to about 300 yds . Thinking about getting the action trued and a rebarrel . My question is what are realistic groups at 600yds with a 308 ? Not the once in awhile 3 shot amazing group but the average 5 shot groups shooting in good conditions .
Thanks Chris
with good barrel and skills 1.2 to 3 inches my brother took my 308 and shot 4 shots in .860 the 5th took it too 1.3..then I took it and shot a 3.3 group then a 4 inch group then I quit...he's just better than me...at 500yds my little home range
