Berger 7mm 190gr long range hybrid

After quite a bit of load development. I ended up with the following. Straight 284 1.25" straight 31" 9 twist barrel.

Peterson brass turned to 0.0145" neck wall thickness
190 Berger LRHT
53.0 grains of Reloder 23
Fed GM210M
0.009" off of lands

This gets about 2755 fps at 25 DegF ambient. Very low ES, shoots great. We will see how temp stable this RE-23 is come summer.

Good to know for reference. I'll be putting together a 284 Shehane in a few months time so this is useful reference data. If I could hit 2800-2820fps and achieve reasonable brass life then I would be very happy. How do you find the primer pockets on the Peterson brass? My Peterson brass comes in significantly heavier than Norma 6.5-284 and Lapua 6.5-284 brass so I'm hopeful the primer pockets hold up a bit longer.

Only 3 firings on this brass. Primer pockets feel good. I did get up to 54.8 grains during pressure testing. Hard extraction but primer pocket feels good. This was a very compressed load just to find max. No ejector on this bolt so no info from that. FYI, Definitely over pressure and around 2830 fps.

I use RL23 as well in my Shehane. I tried RL26 and although it gave great velocity, it would foul out the bbl. before I could get 60 record shots off so I abandoned it. I hope this helps,
Lloyd

Do you happen to know if the Berger 190s at 2755fps offer a ballistic advantage over the 184s at 2800fps? I don't have any software to allow me to test that theory...

I stand corrected, according to Strelok Pro in a 20kmph crosswind the 190's offer a small advantage to the tune of about 0.2MOA.

My main worry is whether the 190 is too much bullet for a Shehane to drive successfully without running into pressure issues.

Willow, why not just use the berger data on their ballistics calculator to work it out?

Never mind.

But I would say that the 190 maybe a bit much for it. Just my opinion.

Thanks....

What about OAL (Over-All Length)?
How close are those 190's from bottoming up in the Hornady gauge?
Here you go but keep in mind this is a little less scientific simply because the 190s have a much better and more consistent tip than the 184s so there could be slight variations but they would be very minute.

Any testing of these through a Saum? I lost record 19 at Berger after 12 sighters with 195’s, very last string. My beloved 195’s. Primer looked just like others - as opposed to showing lower pressure from undercharge. 36 inch barrel. Supposition is jacket delamination.

I’ve only run about 500 of the 190s through a straight .284 but am building a Shehane as we speak to start testing as well. Looking forward to seeing what can be done with that combo.

David Joe, can you rephrase that last post I did not understand your message? Thanks, Mike

Sure, I think I blew up a 195. I was wondering if the 190’s had been tested at high velocity/pressure.

In my case Sunday, I heated up my barrel with apparently too many sighters, and actually I also shot the 19 record shots pretty fast. (Shot 20 was delayed by the miss while I misjudged the change and was an 8.)

Those factors make me think my bullet delaminated. The other way it could miss the target is being loaded too low by mistake. But the primer of that shot didn’t look to me like it was a colder load. Edit: I hadn’t previously lost a 195, but in 2017/18 over more than a thousand shots, two of my Saums with the same barrels did blow up ELDM’s, then several Scenars, and then a single 180H, which had been both spotted and observed by me to nearly hit the target or strike it low, while other times hit the ground very short.

The 195’s have the thin jacket so the likely hood of a blow up is very high. The 190’s have a thicker jacket like the rest of the hybrids is a safe bet

I'll be following your Shehane with interest John as I'm probably 5 months away from getting one up and running myself - waiting on lead time for a new stock before I start.

Davidjoe, Thanks for the detailed explanation. I was not familiar with your type of competition. I shoot benchrest. AS soon as the weather breaks so I can get to my targets in the fields I will be testing My SAUM and 284 with the 190 and RL23 & RL 26. MY friend is working on his Sheahane now with the same components.

David
Omar also lost 2 shots with the 195’s in a Saum. Shots 19 and 20
