6.5x47 HV gun?

Been thinking about having a gun built for fun and local BR comps (Byers, CO) at 1000yrds. I was originally thinking I would just build a straight 6BR, but recently started to think about what might work a bit better for the wind I've got here. I know the big step up would be to a 300 WSM, but that's A LOT of powder and recoil.

What's the consensus on 6.5x47 for BR work? All the talk I found searching happened years ago and seemed largely speculative. I'm feeling like it probably isn't a great option since I've not heard of anyone running them successfully. Thoughts?

Go with a dasher. Itll get you there and not make you pull your hair out
I like the Dasher apart from the whole forming business. Perhaps this is just the excuse to get DJ to form it for me!

1:8 twist? Approx 100 freebore? Shoot 108ELDM for fun/cheap and Bart's bullets when I'm competing?

I have an 8.5 twist 6.5-47L barrel for my MB. It is 1.25" straight contour finished at 30".
I shoot RL16 and 123 SMK (pointed version) for HG some time and have actually done very well with it.
I don't remember that I shot it at any 1,000 yard matches but have quite a few 600 yard matches. It finished second HG and HG small group at MSSA (Memphis) a couple years back.
We have a guy @JamesnTN that has shot it in our club match (a very competitive group I might add) and won just about all the HG SOY awards for 2019.

I had my 6.5x47 Lapua built three years ago when no one else in our club had one. Now there are a half dozen others. They all shoot and are not too fussy. 39 grains H4350, 140 berger VLD at the lands shoots 1/4moa at 500...that's as far as we can shoot at home.

Do any of you folks who shoot the 6.5x47 have experience with a 6BR variant and feel that the x47 made life better or easier?

I'm drawn to the longer barrel life and the better ballistics of the x47. I shoot ~5000 rounds a year and burn out a barrel every 12-18mo across multiple rifles I cycle through. A Dasher feels a bit short on barrel life, like I'll have to worry about saving it or have spare barrels ordered every 6 mo to cover the 1 per year replacement rate.

Now theres alpha brass!
Just curious. How much personal experience do you have with the Alpha 6 Dasher brass?
I have a couple hundred on hand but have yet to load any. As close as I've come is seating a bullet to check the neck diameter. I think it will need a slight neck turn before I do any loading on it.
I think by the time you did that DJ could form and neck turn you some Lapua for about the sane $$.

Go for it . The 6.5 x 47 will make you smile , good luck with your build. dave

I have Lapua & Norma for most of what I shoot.

Got a crazy hair and did a 6mm Creed.

Went Alpha SRP for the brass.

It’s by far the most consistent, highest quality brass I own.

Buy Alpha for you Dasher and don’t look back.

Would you recommend an 8 twist with a 175ish freebore to shoot 140gn?

EDIT: What would be a good neck to go with? 293?
Evan I run an 8tw @ 30" .293 neck .145 fb , yes yes I know this is to short , but guess what ? you might want to stock up on rl 16 , this will let you keep your hair. also you will need a long drop tube with a very slow pour . hope this helps . dave edit : At your elev. in co an 8.5 should work great also.

Mine is a shorter freeborn with a .290 neck. That's okay because, while I can get away with 140's with the 8.5 twist, I prefer the 123/130 class bullets for BR.
I think you'll be needing the 8 twist for the 140 class bullets and the .293 neck is okay due to the high quality of brass.

Zero. I have no problem making my own brass from lapua

having shot at crc, both heavy and light gun, I would not have a 6 dasher for heavy with the winds they have. there is a trade off in bbl life and how long you can shoot well. go read my 5 threads (competition forum) on a new heavy gun for 600/1000. the answer in my case (I have a 25 lb limit), was a 300 wsm. yes you can shoot a smaller case shoot more, but win less.
dasher for lite/300 wsm for heavy

Last year I switched to a 6.4 x 47 from a 6 BRX because I wanted to try something new, was getting bored with the same caliber for about 10 years. Switched back to the BRX for last match of the year. Found no advantage with the 6.5, only more recoil and perhaps a bit less inherent accuracy.

I own both a 6.5x47 and a 6mmBR and the BR is really fun to shoot but I must admit that the 6.5x47 is easier to tune but pickier on powder choice.
