South bend lathe?

Why do you say that? The SB 13" lathe was produced in bed lengths of 4,5,6,7 and 8 foot lengths. Between centers was from 16"-64" for the various models. I have a SB 13 with a 6' bed, built in 1971, I estimated the weight at 1200 lbs. I love it for what I do.

My old SB 10L 10x36" was about 1,200 lbs with the cabinet. My 13x40 SB according to SB is around 1,700-1,800 lbs. there was a noticeable difference on my 3,500 lbs trailer between the two.

Keep looking for a heavy 10 sometimes refered to as 10L or H10. I love old U.S.A. Stuff. Doesn’t wear out, if you take care of it, just may need adjustments.
The 13 will be good as well but I would shy away from the others.
There is no way to get an accurate cost estimate by pictures or discussing. Tooling is extremely valuable to the deal but more so is the headstock bearings, ways, etc......

I have an Enco 13x40. Not super expensive but a good lathe. It does everything I need to do. Spindle has 1.5" bore. D1-4 chuck mounting. I bought a 6" and 8" three jaw chucks from Shars. Much better than the OEM chuck. Cost was around $4000 when I bought it new 20 years ago. You can find good used ones still for around $4k or less.

"How does one cut a chamber while turning between centers?"

Actual cutting of the chamber is done in the steady rest. Concentric to the bore chucking surfaces at the muzzle and the breach are turned between centers prior to chambering.

"Between centers" is the term used to refer to this method.
