Who Knows the 222 Remington?

Just looked at it and measured. The barrel diameter one inch in front of the recoil lug is 1.063" so if I set it back an inch I'll only have a shoulder of about .031-.032" (barrel thread of 1.00"X20).

If your looking for a lower cost barrel check out Barrel Brothers. They sell Wilson Barrels. The brand used by Cooper.Check their website .

A caution for you on the Wilson barrels, the ones used by Cooper are lapped, not all Wilson barrels are - something you may want to check on if you do decide to order one.

Ragged Hole Barrels aka Barrel Brothers. Website states barrels are lapped and air gaged.
Have you ever used a Douglas ?

Hmm...154.95 for a Green Mountain 1.2" diameter straight SS blank. !70.00 for a Wilson SS already profiled from Ragged Hole.

Let's see, where's my calculator...15.05 to turn the blank down to desired profile. Gosh let me think about that. Is it worth it? :P

I appreciate your info, got an original 788 that I bought new for my Dad in the 60s. He hauled that thing on the dash of at least 3 farm pickups that he wore plum out, killed a freight train load of coyotes, buzzards, and any thing else he thought needed to be dead with it. Kept me busy loading shells for it, 100 at a time. 20.5 grs of 4198 and 52gr serrias. Anyway I sent it to my gunsmith to rebuild it and the barrel was gone and I hated to spend 500 on a project like that just to pass on to the family but think I could handle one of those contured barrels, thanks, John

Well I went and did it. 12 twist #4 contour. Apparently in stock. I would have chosen 14 twist but that wasn't an option.
For a cheap option, lapped, profiled, which the GM is neither, and less money. And no wait of 4 months for a barrel from some more well-regarded makers. We'll see how it goes. I have a Wilson AR barrel and it shoots alright.

Better call your smith and get on his list. My blank arrived in 3 days.

I just talked to my smith and he said that he put one on for a customer in a valkiere or how ever you spell it, and it shot great... gonna call them tomorrow, thanks guys, John

It begins.

Barrel arrived yesterday. Within 3 business days! It looks great. Took a look with the infamous 50 dollar bore scope. Not a tool mark in sight!

I'll post back when I get it done and test fire it, but that's not going to be soon. It's a good thing I'm not doing this for a living. I'd be making about a dollar an hour. Just spend the better part of an hour looking for my lathe face plate. Found it packed away in a tote with drywall and painting tools. Thanks honey.
