Do it yourself Stock making thread

I worked on some stocks this weekend.

The Left one will be in a Raffle here soon via a friend Doug Day via Boltgunners on Instagram and his website

Middle is a new piece I just started shapping and wanted to see the figure and color

the one on the right I have been working of for a while and will be my 223 wylde build

Very nice! That middle one is spectacular!
This prone stock is a forum donation. I just reverse the process. I fill a specific request.;)

What do you mean Why?
Well, on this one, the member sent me some pictures to illustrate what he wanted. It had a cheekpiece that could be raised but the cut went right thru the cheek “pad”. I thought. Hmmm.....why?

It would be nicer if it was all one piece, right? It just took a little fiddling to figure out how.

I got ya, would definitely be easier as a one piece. That looks pretty tricky to figure out, you are braver than me for attempting that. You have done a hell of a job on it so far!!

Thanks. I like a challenge, once in a while. Besides, the member is a heck of a nice guy and deserves the extra effort. One more:

It’s about raising my skill level to “stock building 102”.;)
Don’t sell yourself short. Looking at your work, I know you have the skills!

I don't know how high the 'stock making skill level' goes, but THAT prone stock should be bumping the upper reaches. Great workmanship. The contrast of the cheek piece is an 'eye catcher', and well executed.
Outstanding!!!

Thanks Jim! I was just using some scrap pieces I had saved because they had nice figure. I just wish it had been big enough to do the whole thing.;)
This one was a lot of fun to make. I might just do another one, although I gotta say: Getting down on the ground and back up again is getting harder!

Consider it practice, for eventually assuming the supine position, which we will all encounter, on reaching what comes after 'maturity'. If one plays his cards right, the last thing one might see is a center X.
Probably wouldn't be a bad way to engage the 'hereafter', and gripping a well appointed prone stock to boot.

@joshb Killer work as always bud. Looking first class with the prone stock! I love how that cheek riser turned out!

Pretty much finished this one up over the weekend. I need to add some flush cups & do a final bedding job before it is ready to send out for photos and raffle. I did a test fit with two different actions and barrel combos to make sure it would fit with a standard Rem bolt handle and the modified straight handle. If it hadn't been raining in South Carolina non stop I could have gotten some better pictures in the sun shine.

That looks nice, Cstuck! I like the stippling. Question: Do you reinforce the wrist on any of your stocks! Anytime I get a certain grain pattern running thru my wrist, I drill a hole and epoxy a piece of 3/8 threaded rod into it. Sometimes up from the bottom, sometimes down thru the top. Just a thought.

Thank you, I really like how the stippling turned out. Reinforcement is one my list to finish it out, I forgot to add that in the post above. I am going with a piece of 5/16" rod I have in the shop. I plan on going from the bottom and filling it back with epoxy. I have used the 5/16" rod with one previous stock and it seemed to strengthen it enough.

Josh, did you reinforce the cheekpiece where it is thin?
A wood dowel through the grip makes a good reinforcement also.

Sharp mind! Yes, I did. The way the grain was running, I thought it was best to reinforce it. I cut a 1/8” piece of walnut and glued it to the back with the grain running vertically. It goes 1/2” higher than the bottom of the main piece. You can see it if you blow up the pic of the cheekpiece.

I thought about using a dowel in the grip but I have a bunch of threaded rod left over from another job. I figured stronger was better.;)
Here’s a blown up pic. You can see the grain change and the joint.
