My BSWN 2019 Lessons

I had a great time at the BSWN but I was not prepared this year. I bought two rifles to shoot One for mid range, one Plama and 1000 yards. First rifle I shoot the wrong ammo my bullets were too long by .032 of a inch. that ended up with to many flyers. Plama 800 ok wind manly 900 good was getting the wind figured out, But at 1000 the shooter next to me cross fried 6 times on my target just got in to my mind and I started to shoot to fast before he shoot my target. Every body told him that he was cross firing but he keep up doing it. Next day at 1000 Yards half way through relay one my two stage trigger turned into a single stage. I shot a 0 played with trigger to get a fell for it and did not notice a 180 wind shift #2 a 0 over adjuster a 0 -30 in three shoots. I took the trigger apart and found out my cleaning foam had made it's way into my trigger. Last day I got the trigger working But the wind got all I shot was 10's and 9's and few 8's on wind shifts not one X. So what dis I learn mark my ammo better and triple check it. When I clean the bore clean the trigger too. Do not let Cross fire get into your mind.

Staying focused due to any number of reasons is the most important factor to perform at your capability. While everyone's capability is different due to gear, practice, skill, etc the mind game is the most important come game day.

One of the "things" I have found in this game is: "If it's YOUR day, you can't do anything wrong"! "If it's NOT your day, you can't get anything right"! LOL!! I remember I was shooting for the "Mid-Range" Club Championship at Bayou Rifle one year. At the 600 yard line (at that time they shot 300 then 600 yards for the Mid-Range Club Championship) I was pounding the 10 and X ring. I bumped my 2 oz. trigger and it went off! I thought>> "this is the end for me"! However, it came up a 10! Barely a 10 BUT a ten nonetheless! I also remember 1 year for either the State or Regional at Palo Alto Mid-Range, and no matter what I did I could not BUY a ten! I lost by >>>A BUNCH!!! LOL!!

Will, long range F-Class does require every aspect of your rifle, load and other equipment to be at it's best. Always remember you only have control over your equipment and your shots. You should be able to rely on your scorer to know when your target was pulled down before you broke your shot and not need to change your shot rhythem. Lessons learned painfully, tend to be lessons never forgotten. Best of luck.

Well the way it looks from here, the consequences of inexperienced shooters can be pretty awful....slow target service, drama on the line, lack of zeros, missing shots while scoring, etc....it all diminishes the experience for those who are prepared for the match. Maybe it's time to make the SWN an invitational event.

I understand your points here and they are well taken. On B-I-G matches or even "Club Championships" brand new shooters can become a handicap to the other shooters on their target and possibly those near them.. Personally, it would not bother me for all B-I-G matches to be invitation only. Until a brand new shooter obtains the necessary experience to not be a handicap, they should be relegated to learning at "club matches"..

That’s a tough call guys. At what level do you draw the line? You can’t do it, if they commit to the expense then they may be ready.... as hard as it was to get in this match then I doubt anybody with a afterthought got in.

You are quite right Mike, it would be a tough call.. However, if the BIG events were "invitation only", the decision would lie in the hands of the orchestrators of the event. Then if there were any "significant problems" they would probably be kept to a bare minimum.. However, once someone pays, they have the right to shoot>>>period..

Just because you want to doesn't mean you are qualified to. Committing the time and money isn't a qualifying attribute for a match of this stature. Draw the line at Expert and above. Easy peasy. That will ensure that the participants will have been to more than a couple of matches and hopefully learned the rudimentary skills needed to compete in a major event like the SWN. The situation has gotten completely out of hand and has to be addressed. This isn't an "everyone gets to play" game any more. It has evolved into THE premier long range match in the country, bar none. It brings together the very best in the game to compete head to head. Getting screwed by poor pit service or missed scoring or whatever should not happen. One should have to have a certain level of proficiency to participate.

Just because someone can shoot to a high level doesn't mean they grasp the concept of good pit service.
I'm starting to believe some of that comes from local clubs that have a culture of screwing over outsiders, new shooters or anybody not in their clique. They carry that mentality over to other events.

If someone is cross firing 6 times on my target I might actually time my shot to be with his/hers and get the better of the two scores... just saying...

:)

Lemons ——>> lemonade

After the 2nd or 3rd crossfire, the only reason I would time my shots would be when I took a few seconds break to go over and bury the front half of my boot, if you get my meaning ;).

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes, Bill. It's always a good plan to be as pro-active about things as possible, but some things are simply out of your control. When that happens, you try not to lose your cool, which only makes things worse.

I agree.

30 second pit service is horrible. Especially when pounding the x ring.
Target goes down, 30 seconds later target comes up and spotter is moved 3”.
Yes this happened. It was addressed and service was a little better. Everyone should be able to give 10 second service. Especially with two people pulling and marking the target.

Hello Matt! You seem to be making an excellent case for SHOT MARKER electronic targets.. These would reduce much of this less than desirable trait(s) associated with a brand new shooter..

From my experience, I would not be the better shooter I am today if the BSWN was invitation only. In 2017, I was a Marksman. I had no real mentor in ftr at my club. I went to the BSWN and was able to spend 35 educational minutes Al Barnhart about my set up and position. Later that week I had a scope that was lent to me after mine broke. At 1,000 yards, bore sighting, Ian Klemm cranking on the turret and Brian litz giving us the come up I hit the target first shot. Besides that I had so many conversations and got so many wind tips I got better instantly.

Since then I have been very fortunate to have friendships from that match. And I have learned so much. I never would have gained so much without that one match in 2017.

Without new shooters in the pipeline and learning from the best I fear there would be a lot of lost info. I don't think there is any perfect one way to look/run at a match like the BSWN. But as I understand it, it's a pro/am and it's serving it's purpose.

Another consideration is the classification. I know a few good ftr shooters from nevada, idaho, wyoming that are not as high as experts but also shoot at some nasty ranges. A higher class may not accurately assess the quality and knowledge of the shooter.

This is just another point of view. Not right or wrong I hope. Just my first hand experience.

If ET’s can be more accurate and bug proof, sure.
In some ways i like the slow service. It makes me a better shooter having to watch conditions and make adjustments.
I am a big proponent in getting F Class to what it is supposed to be. Pair firing.
Will gaurantee if it does, scores will go down for awhile but then go back up.
