Three Favorite Deer Cartridges

My all time favorite would have to be the 280 Ackley with the 7mm-08, either Ackley or standard coming in a close second. I had great success with 140-150 grain bullets.

I'm not a trophy hunter but have shot enough to know what works. A properly constructed bullet at a terminal velocity that insures adequate penetration to a properly placed shot. I've used .223 to .41 Magnum and .50 caliber Inline, they all gave anticipated results with the above caveats. Only ever lost one due to an improper bullet placed improperly and it still haunts me...respect your quarry.

250-3000 Savage,6.5x284 and not the 30-06 (no hate mail please the 30-06 is a fine cartridge, I just like using something that I can’t buy ammo for at Walmart)

It appears to me that some of you are hunting Rhino sized deer with those great big bullets.

Where I’m at in Kansas the cwd is in one out of around 3 deer tested for the food bank. So I’m no longer eating them until the cwd mover on after it ravages our whitetail herds. So I’ve turned to long range hunting for enjoyment. Those big bullets are just fun.

.280 AI
.280 Remington
7mm-06

I refer to the last two as “The thinking man’s .270.”

Oh, and all of them can be loaded to replicate the 7mm-08.

7mm-08 with 140 Sierra Pro Hunters, 25-06 with 117 Sierra Pro Hunters, that’s basically all I am using now for out to 300. I’d add the 444 marlin with 300 beartooth WFN’s for woods hunting.

What are you three favorite deer cartridges, you can even choose your bullet for out to 300 yards? I was thinking about it last night and finally came down to 7mm Mauser (7x57), 6.5-284 and 270WSM The 7x57 would shoot the Nosler Accubond LR 168 grain, the 6.5-284 would shoot the 142 grain Nosler Accubond LR and the 270 WSM would shoot again the Nosler accubond LR in 150 grain. I think all three of these would be effective out to 300 yards. My favorite being the 7x57, killed a truckload with my Ruger No.1 using the Noslers.
250 Savage and the Speer 120 Grand Slam, 257 Roberts and the 25/06.
