hunting subsonic???

Ok, I LIKE me some suppressed pombie-zoppin BUT, other than shooting tree squeerrels with Match ammo in a 10-22 ain't a whole lot of HUNTIN' to be had, cuz...... energy.

Or, more specifically, the LACK thereof.

Don't get me wrong, hunting squirrels or ringing gongs with a 22LR gives me a chubber just THINKING abou'dit..... it's COOL, but limited

To elucidate. The 300 AAC Blackout even with 240's has about 350ftlb energy 50yds out. That's about like catching a medicine ball....

A friend of mine spent 2yrs perfecting a subsonic AR 5.56. It is also cool but all's I could think of was "congratulations, you've made an AR into a 22 long rifle ...."

So, for 4yrs I've been dinking with a 50cal subsonic. It does amazing things.... for instance it's got more killeraciousness at 600yds than a 308 at 60yds... not a subsonic 308, a 308 Winchester shooting 180's.

And it kicks the everlovin' SNOT out of me...

But I'm asking. "Is anyone else out there working on anything subsonic that produces game-killing energy?"

I'd love to hear about it.

100 yards with a 200 Maker Rex bullet

60 yards with cast bullet

50 yards 200 gr Maker Rex
All recovered game from different folks. No different than anything else - shot placement.

Well one would guess that a 405 grain 45/70 would not take a lot of work to be subsonic and still have a ton of energy. I would not go hunting dangerous game like that but in a lever gun a follow up would be fast, and full power if needed.

Wow Popcorn.... you are a multi-talented man. I can now see that for close up and culling/crop control the 30 is more effective than I gave it credit for.

SPS 7-08 130g

Two sopes.... two different cast loads. This 1-4X20 is IMR4198 @1800fps. The 3-12X40 is 26-2700 with Varget.

This was the last hog of the season, offhand @50 yds.... was out for some practice with the beer can load. Just gotta learn how to shoot alinwa.20180910_171152_resized.jpg

As said, those are various guys I know on 300 Blk talk, not me. It is a very versatile round and I enjoy it.

6mm, and 30 whisper , 7mm,300,338 and 375 grendel , 338 and 375 BR , 416 and 510 SOCOM , 510 whisper ..... and a .729 wildcat on a 12 gauge coming up before too awful long:)

I'm not even a pimple on a gurus behind but I shoot drive by prairie dogs with my Rem 700, 300 BO, suppressed, subsonic, 200 grain cast bullets. Something to do.

Sounds like fun.... like shooting them with an over-sized 22! I'm guessing you use a hard-cast bullet?

I've shot only dead-soft pure lead from Roto-Metals in my big gun because I'm trying to make an effective big game rifle, bullets to mushroom on meat. The soft lead fouls the bore terribly so I turned a swage out on the lathe and tried 875gr soft lead bullets paper patched with notebook paper. It's an amazing thing power-wise, like throwing a bulldozer..... but definitely not a truck gun :) This animal kicks like nothing you've ever experienced. I've bought an expensive machined aluminum hydraulic recoil damper from some shotgun guru in the east but haven't put it together yet.

I'm next going to try some hard cast 875's kinda' guessing that even if it doesn't mushroom at all a half inch wound channel is pretty aggressive.

Even with 750gr A-Max's it'll plow a furrow through 15ft of sod before popping up to continue down the road a fair piece..... but that works both ways. I haven't yet figgered how to counter the ferocious recoil. Right now, to be comfortable to shoot, the gun needs to weigh 20lb. And my setup weighs 6lb.

It might be worth looking at the energy numbers again on 30 cal. sub-sonic, with known performing bullets.

A 220 grain at 1050 fps will have over 500 pounds at the muzzle and even some of the poorest BC bullets will still be over 350 pounds at 300 yards. A good one will carry that to 500+. They drop velocity very slowly.

For comparison Sierra 220 round nose vs SMK.

The round nose would drop below 850 fps/350e around 500 yards.
The SMK closer to 900.

Most will hold close to 500 pounds to 100 yards.

alinwa. Yes they are wheelweights. Seem to shoot pretty clean as far as barrel fouling goes.. I got a suppressor that I can disassemble to clean if need be. So many toys!!!!

.510 x 950gr cast next to 45-70 , flattens whatever I've shot with it.

I shoot the Lehigh 570 grain out of my .458 SOCOM and it is a beast !
This load is out of a Savage short action(.243 or .308 mags work)thumbnail (22).jpg as this load would blow up an AR based platform.
