Custom rifle barrels from Remington

Saw an old friend today and he was sighting in a new rifle. Gunsmith had installed a new barrel on a 700 receiver and it was nutless. Strange to me was it was a barrel bought from Remington. The owner said something about it being and "X pro barrel" or something like that. It had the Remington factory roll printing but eluded to the fact it was custom. Has anyone heard of this? Where do you get them? Do I want one?

How well did it shoot?

No I know exactly what a Remage is, and many shooters and gunsmiths assemble them that way. This gun was for sure rebarreled, and it was done in the same manner as a standard 700. As for how it shot, I was not a witness. The owner and his friend were impressed, but I don't know what their expectations are.

Seems strange as Remington Custom shop barrels are not roll stamped, UNLESS times have changed. None of mine are, they are only cartridge/caliber stamped. That's how you tell if some dude at a gun show is trying to sell you a pig in a poke.

This is not a barrel that came on a rifle from the factory.
And it's a safe bet it did not come from the custom shop either. I hope he enjoys his barrel. It's no more than a modified barrel such as JayBeYou alluded to.

I've got an old 40XBR that is a stock rifle from the late seventies. Believe the barrel is the original from Remington at that time. Did Remington rifle their own barrels for the custom shop rifles at that time, or contract it out to --?? Only stamps on this one are the cartridge, 22BR Rem, and (R.E.P) and a few other tiny numbers.

Does their custom shop make barrels? jd

Here's what the markings look like on a Remington Custom Shop barrel; at least in 2004. This is my 40XBKS - I was told it was a Wilson barrel.

They were known to use Hart barrels, possibly among others. The little misc markings are proof and inspectors marks.
I may well be mistaken, but the use of Hart barrels may be an "urban legend". I think that this got started when Remington used a heart shaped proof mark and many shooters thought that that was an indication they were using barrels from Hart. Good shooting....James

James your correct'' I asked JIM STEKL ABOUT this ALSO Mike Walker .
At the time Remington was using the button rifle process. They made their own button rifled, hand lapped barrels in the custom shop.

They used schnieder barrels on real sniper rifles but unless you were one you likely never seen one. Past that as far as i know you were getting a remington barrel on everything from a 40x to a speedmaster. That lack of rollstamping on a 40x cost a lot of money to have a remington in the end.

Wanna buy a bridge ?
Sorry couldn't resist . Is it anyone local I'd know ? Either the smith or shooter ?
Seems like a play on words using the X Mark pro trigger phrase , if the barrel is anything like the trigger , well ,you know that story .

We all learn every day. That still does not change the OP's assumption, nor validate his friends claim.
