Ga.Where are you located?
Ga.Where are you located?
I assure you it is an ongoing quest. As conditions change so does the tune. You are very lucky. It appears you have found the secret to a problem countless shooters have been searching in vain for.
As a shooter I enjoy reading the diversified theories and practices to achieve ones own goal. In my findings there are many ways to achieve the end result but it must be repeatable. I'm always looking for a better way. I'm fortunate enough to spend more time on the range than most. Recently I have used the terminal velocity to aid with load development. I have found this information extremely surprising/valuable. With this info I can assess each bullets BC and determine when it effects the location impact on target. This has greatly reduced the number of shots required to determine a load. With the historical DOPE I have found I can produce a great load in less than 10 shots. This process has proven itself with 7 setups thus far from PRS to Benchrest Setups. It has been the most consistent and repeatable process for me to date. I am curious if anyone else is currently using terminal velocity in load development?
....
It is pretty simple as I have to practice the KISS method.
I generally start with the projectile at or near 0 in relation to the lands. I already have an idea on starting powder charge and I always start low. I do not concern myself with velocity as long as I'm within 200 fps of what the cartridge is capable of and I don't mean max. Depending on case size I adjust my charges accordingly example for 300 wsm I adjust in half gn increments. I only load 1 of each charge. I then fire them with lab radar at muzzle and electronic target captures speed at target. It is extremely easy to see/record what is happening. Usually I'll find 3 points with very little vertical that's all I'm looking for. At 1k it's .7 or less. I then load up 3 each of the different charges fire for group once again easy visual report. Note with the terminal velocity you can detect a bullet with a different BC. Every bullet has its own BC.
Then some final tweaking and I'm done.
Jeeepers, gotta' get me one a' them PRS's and take that class....... I be FIGHT to get them 3"ers with my 65lb 300WSM using the big March 8-80 scope and treating each round like a Thee Sacred Chalice of Nevermoore............ that's about 13 Grand I woulda'coulda' not spent......
The 300wsm heavy gun is actually the easiest one to achieve 3" in my opinion.
JUS' sayin'......
YesSame process you outlined in this prior thread?

I seriously doubt I can ever come close to breaking even for what I have invested. You are about to make a TON of money if this works!
I will pay more attention to the 100 yard groups in the future. I have tuned at 100 gotten very, very small holes then went to 1k and no joy. Why it works in reverse I think the load is tuned better. How small are we talking at 100 when you say small? And if you were able to tweak it a bit at 100 to get smaller, would it be even smaller at 1000? Why do people say the smallest group at 100 may not necessarily be the best at 100
Me to so far so good.I keep looking for a method that will work every time. I hope you found it!
