Carbon removal test. Barrel Damage Test.

I took six pieces of 300 BLK brass that was tossed into the recycler and carried out a carbon removal test. All pieces still had a primer.

I filled a piece of brass with the following cleaners and allowed them to sit for 20 minutes before dumping the contents down the drain.

X-Treme Copper Killer
Sweets 7.62
Butches Bore Shine
Hoppe's
WipeOut
CLR

I know some are not carbon cleaners, but I was surprised by the results.

After draining each case, I took a Q-tip and brushed the inside of the case to try and get it as clean as I could.

In first place.... CLR. Every speck of carbon had come out. Even looked like the primer was clean.
Second. Sweets
Third. Butches
Fourth. X-Treme
Fifth. Wipe Out.
Sixth. Hoppe's.

Picture of the CLR case.

I did this to learn what removes carbon the best for future use in a barrel. I am NOT cleaning brass cases with this!

Great idea! I'm going to steal this idea just to check the amount of buildup I have. Also looks like I'm going to be picking up some CLR next time I see it.

I just cut some open and can tell yours are not once fired only... Mine are close to the one of yours on the top left before cleaning. Mine were 2-4 firings and looked better then yours. Mine build up carbon on the bottom, opposite side of primer pocket, and on the shoulder, the body seems somewhat clean. I tried a q-tip with hoppes on it and seemed to do well but that's 1 q-tip per probably 10 rounds and cleaning each individually so adds more time.

Thanks for showing your test results. Surprised Butches did so well. Usually get frustrated with it as a cleaning agent. Gonna re-look at that as I have a few bottles.

Then hardly a fair test with just a single layer of carbon.

Repeat with an uncleaned case after 5 firings would give what you found some proper validity.
RIP! Thinking for his preferred prepping process, it's the shiznit.

There was only one shot since last cleaning. I am using pistol powder for subsonic rounds. Filthy stuff.

One might think he hasn't heard of an ultrasonic bath.

I have a sonic cleaner. Just prefer the SS cleaning. This wasn't a way to find a new brass cleaning method. It was a visual way to see what the cleaners do with carbon for future barrel cleaning techniques.

You need a piece of velcro on your deflector my friend.

I am beating up some brass, huh? I anneal after every firing too. Haven't had a crack yet.

Sweets and Butches were a tough call, even compared to the CLR. CLR won because the primer was cleaned up! Pictures don't show what I am referring to, but that was the deciding factor between first and second place for me.

This PPC case had about 30 firings on it. I was surprised myself how clean it came out with the C-4View attachment 1064297

Thanks for the comparison. Soak for 20 minutes?

Try sea foam.
The butchs and c4 are my main choices for carbon. The rest just dont cut it for me

I might have some. If I do, I'll post it tomorrow.
