Dasher Brass Oversized Issue

Try Redding competition shell holder.
Lenny ,,,,this is NOT the solution to your problem,,,,you cant get your ctgs short enuff to go in your chamber that is headspaced tooooo short !!!....these Redding comp shell holders are progressively taller deck height than the std shell holder which is .125"....they are .002-.004-.006-.008-.010" more deck height which gives longer length to the shoulder of the ctg,,,you need to go shorter !!!...Roger

Arrgh! Brain went in reverse. Thanks Roger.

Dumb question, how many times did you fire the brass before you measured and started bumping the shoulders ?

I ask cause I’ve seen where your brass is not fully grown on the 1st firing, takes 2 or 3. Well what happened to a customer was he was bumping on 1st, brass still needed to grow. So he sized on 2nd firing and brass was still growing, it bulged the .200 just enough to get tighter, after the 3rd firing it wouldn’t chamber without being tight.

We fired 5 cases 3x without bumping shoulders (neck sized only),he was prematurely pushing them over .006” before fully formed causing other issues.

Only fired once before resizing on full length Forster die.

Brass would rechamber just fine after first firing, but not after full length sizing.

I think you’ve got a handle on the issue, but just to explain further...

When you full length size a case the entire body diameter of the case is squeezed inward. The brass needs a place to go so the first thing that happens is that the shoulder is pushed forward until it runs out of room in the die. Once it runs out of room for the shoulder, then the shoulder is pushed back as the body of the case is being squeezed. This isn’t really a Forster die issue, just how any full length die works.

You’ve set the headspace on your chamber smaller than the amount of room inside the sizing die at full cam over. The only solution is to back the barrel out a bit so that it’s closer to halfway between go and no-go gauges, rather than being a firm close on a go gauge.

So I backed the barrel off tonight. So much that it closes with effort on a "no-go" gage. The resized brass is STILL tight to chamber. Obviously not as tight as before, but resistance is there. All my other brass chambers easily, it's only the stuff that's has been resized on the Forster dies and not fired that is tight.

At this point I think it's the die.

Ps. My no-go gage was actually a go gauge with a .003" thick tape on the base.

Have you measured the bases of your brass? Also the last few Forester dies I have played with needed to go back and have 40/1000 taken off the bottom. If yours are the same have than hone the neck at the same time.

Interesting, I’d agree with measuring the base to see what’s going on there. Also unusual that you’re still have trouble with the virgin Norma brass. I’d try marking up a case with a sharpie to see where the case is rubbing on the chamber.

I am not having trouble with virgin Norma brass now that I've backed the barrel off a bit. It's only sized brass that I'm having issues with.

Okay. Curious about what you find. I still think it’s likely in the shoulder or neck junction area. It would surprise me if sizing the brass was enlarging the base. Might be something like a mismatch in shoulder angle between die and brass. I’ve heard of that before with Forster dies.

Lenny,,,how is it going,,,any results,,,,lots of folks tried to help....Roger
I will be happy to report when I get a chance. I ordered the Wilson FL sizing die from Hunts as they said they use it on their hydroformed brass.

Unfortunately I'm out of town on work travel and won't get a chance to touch it for another week.

I absolutely appreciate all the help.

So with the Wilson full length die, I am able to set case headspace back significantly more than I was with the Forster die. Round fed with no issue.

I am going to reset the headspace on my barrel again tonight, then adjust the die for a .001 bump.

thank you for letting us know of your progress,,,,Roger

Ended up just pulling the barrel instead of re headspacing it. I'm getting the muzzle threaded (by a pro this time instead of myself) and timed for my muzzle device (thunderbeast mount).

Lenny, Did you ever measure your brass and compare to the measurements I PM'd you? Just curious! Interested mostly in the measurement at the base. I had the Forster dies and I believe they didn't size the base small enough.

I had a Wilson full length bushing die. It ran perfectly in my chamber
