Yes. I put a 2" barrel cutoff off of my 45 colt in a small container of CLR and it took all the blue off in about 12 hours. BarlowWill the CLR damage bluing?
It must be commercial, I bought it at the local grocery store. BarlowIs this military issued CLR or commercial? I've got a gallon of military CLR , 2 actually, opened one . It smells a little like diesel oil

My jug is labeled the same. BarlowAfter reading about CLR removing carbon I bought a bottle, tried aggressive scrubbing with a tight fitting brass brush followed by borescope imaging. I was quite disappointed as it was largely ineffective for removing carbon.
Maybe the formulation has been changed? On the lower right front label it has a logo stating "Safer Choice" "Meets EPA Safer Product Standards"

I just finished trying CLR on what I thought was a clean barrel , Sweets is about the hardest cleaner out there . I never let a new cleaner soak at first , this CLR after putting some on a patch and running up an down in the barrel I was surprised to see the patch come out saturated with carbon .
I dry patched then ran another with CLR patch came out clean , finished dry patching to remove any traces of CLR , went to old faithful #9 then dry patches.
Sunday is my bench day , well see how it shoots . Didn't have a problem with the barrel or groups , I just find my rifle shoots well clean . thats the only reason I gave CLR a try .

What bullets are you shooting ?
Are you sure it's carbon left in your barrel ?
How often do you do you clean your rifle ?
Don't want to seem like a know it all but I thought CLR wouldn't do much either .
I give my barrel a good cleaning everytime I shoot , I was amazed the amount of carbon
left in the barrel.
To answer your questions...
For my target rifles I use naked Berger bullets
Yes I'm sure, I have a borescope
I clean EVERY time I shoot, even if only a few shots. I typically use Boretech products: C4 Carbon Remover and CU+ Copper Remover but I have tried many types of cleaners. I am an advocate of tight fitting brass brush scrubbing and am not afraid to use Thoroclean (Iosso solution) or Iosso paste if Boretech does not get the job done. I do not like dirty bores and do not let carbon build up.
I will give CLR another try but I was thoroughly unimpressed after my first evaluation.

When it comes to cleaning Im with you that's why Im sure we both gave it a try . I didn't let it soak , the patch was pretty wet , one good scrub back an forth maybe seven times an the patch came out brown . Im using the Parker hale jag , the patch is wrapped around the jag giving me alot of cleaning surface , and the whole Patch came out brown . Second goround the patch was pretty clean . Try giving it another shot . I don't own a bore scope to really see inside . When you tried it dd the patch come out clean ?
Without looking with the scope I could have carbon still in my barrel . Before using the CLR I thought my barrel was clean , I've used KG-1 & KG-12 followed by #9 Tried wipe out - patch out followed by #9 JP Compound & Kroil followed by #9 Even Ballistol followed by #9 , which worked the best . Then came CLR . It's my first goround with it . Will see how it goes . Good Luck , let my know how you make out .

Chris,
I wet the barrel with CLR soaked patch then scrubbed about 12 in and out strokes with a tight brass brush and more CLR. Dry patches followed by the borescope. My conclusion was CLR is ineffective as a hard carbon remover. Of course it will work great at removing powder fouling but so will water.
An assessment of what works by looking at patches is not a reliable way of knowing what progress is being made in the bore.

I agree 100% a good borescope is up there in price. Not in the position to to buy one , so I will relay on what my patches look like for now . The borescope is the real check on what's happening in the barrel . Nice talking to you . Be Well .
