Check/Calibration weights in grains?

I don't see a need for absolute precision (and expense) in check weights. I don't care if the (eg) 50gr check weight I use is actually 0.1gr off.

I also don't care if my scale says the 50gr weight weighs 50.1gr . . . as long as it always says that. Every time.

IMO check weights need to be durable, non-absorbent, and cleanable so they don't gain or lose weight. They also need to be quite close to the weight they claim, but not precise.

The Lyman's check weights are just that. Good enough....

And just as you say, it doesn't matter what the scale reads, as long as it is repeatable.

I took a 22lr case and trimmed it to 12.40gr on my scale - wrote it on the paperwork of the scale and just use it every time to verify my scale is reading the same as the last time. I also have 3 bullets a 34gr 40gr and a 50 gr that i did the same thing with. I just check those things every time i startup the scale. My charges may not be 100% accurate with a NIST cert.. but they are at least the same when compared to those three items. My scale came with a 10gram weight that i also weighed in grains and jotted that down i just checked it today and the scale say 154.20grains (perfect would be 154.32grains) i don't think it will matter in my shooting. my 55gr bullet weighs 54.98gr and my 22lr weighs 12.34 instead of 12.40 again i don't think it will matter much. 12.4 is one of my loads - you could use any old case and file it to the weight you want and always have a load that is very close, lot to lot.
