Short Barreled 28 Nosler

I have an update for anyone curious to know what kind of velocity you can get out of the 28 Nosler in a 16 inch barrel. 2867 using Retumbo and 180grn Berger Hybrids with a SD of 7. This project has been quite a challenge but it’s finally starting to come together.

Mine cost $717 TMD. The accuracy of the dial up has been dead on so far but I have only taken it out to a 1760. I am planning on taking it out to 2400 yards in a couple weeks, I will have a better idea of just how accurate it is after that.
So this dials up yardage in clicks? Sounds like you really have it dialed in. Where is a good place to order from?

No you actually dial up MOA for example if you needed 150 MOA to reach your target and your scope is only capable of 50 MOA you would dial up 125 MOA with the Ivey mount then dial the additional 25 using your scope.

Since the barrel length is going to be the limiting factor, would some thing more mainstream like a 300 win mag or 7 rem mag or wsm case be easier , cheaper and have more readily available info.? Only one place to get Nosler brass?

Yes I would say that any of those cartridges would be cheaper and easier to work with in such a short barrel. I chose the 28 Nosler for a specific job and that was to compete in the Worlds Longest Shot Challenge in Texas this April using a 16” Long Range Handgun. I feel the 28 Nosler gives me the best chance of competing against the rifles in the factory class. McGowen Barrels, Nosler, Accurate Rifle Systems, Stephen Ivey, Mike Abel and Briar Rabbit Shooting Sports have all been extremely supportive and helpful in this challenge and I can’t thank them enough. It has been very tough to come up with a load for the 28 in such a short barrel and the cartridges you mentioned may have been easier to work with but the 28 has the edge in performance which is the reason I chose it.

Did you try the 195 grain Bergers? They shot great in Mike's and mine 28. Good luck at the shoot!

I did but velocity was less than stellar out of the 16 inch barrel. The extra barrel length that you guys use makes a huge difference in performance.

Thanks for using the term "long range handgun" Hate that other term that's commonly used and also sticking to the 16" and under barrel length. Good luck at the match, none of my long range handguns will get as far as you're going to be shooting. I'll have to settle for the mile target at Thunder Valley.

Just got home from the match and thought you might like a picture of my McGowen Barreled 28 Nosler sending some heat, you can see the bullet just in front of the barrel. The photo was taken by Tactiholics and all I can say is they were awesome. We had a fantastic time however I shot awful, the 28 Nosler is very capable in these matches though and surprised everyone especially being shot from a handgun. We shot out to 2680yds and grouped as well as any rifle we just didn’t get on the steel. There were only 3 impacts at 2680 out of 140 shots fired. The wind was also pretty stout, at 2680yds my elevation was 173MOA, I dialed 33MOA and held an additional 5MOA left wind putting all but my first shot on line but just not on the steel. Judging come ups and not seeing impacts at some targets was our downfall at these distances. I’m planning on going back next year again with the 28, I think it is an outstanding cartridge in the handgun platform. Zev Nadler from ELRHQ also did a live interview with me on Saturday about the handgun which was pretty cool. All of the competitors, staff and sponsors were great, it was a fantastic group of people and as I said earlier I had fantastic time and can’t wait for next year.

Three hits out of how many shooters? That is rough. Recoil must be very mild as your eyeball is awful close to that scope. See you this weekend.

In fact I believe that if I was considering a .284 / 7mm caliber with a barrel that short I would choose something that burned a faster powder than the 28 Nosler and cartridges of similar case capacity.-

I have a 284 win in a 15 inch barrel. H4831 and H4350... Powder dont change, it still loves it.. because of the shorter barrel it likes a little hotter charge to get to the node. No biggy.. its like 3 grains more in mine..

Start with regular 28 nosler powders and work up like normal. Forget everyones gibberish. Been here done it..
