Forster CO AX and 6BRA FL problems

hey guys and girls
i need a bit of help as i have run into a problems while trying to FL size my 6BRA cases with my Harrells FL bushing die in my co-ax press
I'm finding i can't get the head space down enough on some of my cases and i have the die down over max eg I'm over camming my press as it is as the shell holder jaws are hitting and stopping on die before my ram is top ...its like i need to grind away the top of shell holder jaws so i can get die down enough
will the Forster shell holder adapter help me in this case and maybe use the redding shell holders that you can adust the seating height??
now some of these cases i now cannot close the bolt without standing on it (only once fired to fire form) so i've had to put these to one side

never had this problem with any of my other dies with 6BR, 6BRX in redding and whidden

or should i just sell it and get a rock chucker ??

cheers
Pethy

I bekieve if you get a regular full length die, you can adjust it to make headspace right. Are you talking new cases Before fireforming? Matt

nah mate I have fire formed the cases and I am trying set up FL die but I can't get to go down far enough to FL cases.. the Harrell die is a dasher die that has .080 taken off bottom so it can FL 6BRA cases.. so I don't know if it' my co-ax that's the problem or my die ..

see pic ram has stopped on die before it goes all the way up... FL size case and some are ok and some are not when chambering
you can see the stop lug is about 5mm off the arm

ok more testing
measure once fired cases (FF 30gr varget)
1.574 (most) to 1.575 with headspace tool you get with die from Harrells
FL bushing sized and most 1.572 and easy to chamber , bolt falls down
but I get some at 1.573 which I can feel resistance when chambering (firing pin out) and handle doesn't fall all way down
but I get some with 1.574 and this is hard to close bolt
I tried adjusting die down more but it makes no difference coz it's hitting the seating case jaws
tried putting brass back in FL die (up to 4 times) and measurements stay the same

ok i now grabbed 5 cases twice fire (fire formed and then with 31gr)
these measured 1.5755 or 1.576.. FL sized and the all measured 1.574 or 1.5745 and all have very hard bolt close ..
Rusty I'm going to need to bring these around to try your RC..
I have enough to load test tomorrow but will need to come over tomorrow arvo/night so I can get some loaded for state titles .. can't shoot it like this

I had the same problem one time.
Try this, re-adjust your die in the press so that thr ram is camming over when resizing the brass.

By camming over, I mean, the press arm is at “bottom dead center” when the ram is in complete contact with die with brass in place. I cannot explain why there is a difference but there is. You end up with a little more “throw” in the press ram when it cams over at the bottom of the cycle.
In other words, full contact between the die and press ram prior to camming over at the bottom of the cycle and camming over at the bottom of the cycle are different.
I hope this helps.

If the die is for a 6 br imp it should be around .080 shorter than a Dasher die, a lot of things enter into it, make sure it is the right die first. and see if it has a 40 degree shoulder, I got a br die for a Dasher once...... You can shorten it with a drill press if you don't have a lathe..... jim

cheers guys , yeah cases are lubed with redding imperial wax , will back die off a bit and try feeler gauges under the case (if i can get them under the sliding jaws as i haven't tried )

you mean shorten it by cutting a bit off the end eg , put in a drill press and use a file on end to cut a bit off??

and it is the right die

I could be wrong but I don’t think it’s a headspace issue. You measured your brass and bumped it back, it measured less so it’s contacting. The brass that was 2x fired came out of your chamber, does it go in well before sizing ? But after sizing it goes in “very hard to close bolt” then your crushing something else or that is causing the bind.

Do the sharpie test or dycem, mark the whole case, try to slip it into the chamber, close the bolt so the extractor catches then close, if it’s rough, open slightly and close multiple times to see where the rubbing is. If it’s a shoulder bump issue you’ll see it on the shoulder very clearly. If it’s a webbing issue it’ll be very pronounced also.

Good luck

I had the same issue with the CoAx with my Harrell's 6 BRA die .080 of the bottom. I also had a issue with a Redding 6.5x47 die . I took my dies to a local shop and they took what I needed +.003 off the bottom of the dies.

You use a stub to measure the fired case and get a measurement then start sizing with the same case till you set the shoulder back .0015 -.002. If you have to shorten the die make a 10-32 that has a shoulder above the threads and cut the head off. run a nut on the threaded part and screw it in the top where the decaping pin goes, this will drive it. Measure the length of the die a couple of places around the die for the length and take some 220 grit paper and set it on a wood block and bring the drill press down till it makes contact hold it a little and remeasure the length till you take about .010 off clean it up and try sizing the case and adjusting it. If you still need more go through the same thing again. If you look at the bottom of the die you will see a radius on it, if you go past this you will need to break the edge by putting the paper over something slightly rounded and break the edge...... jim

nah mate my twice fired stuff is hard to close also , and it's not being bumped back enough to chamber my round with ease after FL sizing and i can't get anymore adjustment out of it

i will be trying a feeler gauge under the case to lift the case and if that gives he the amount i need i will be cutting off a bit on my die like others have suggested

cheers
