Buy Lyman M5 and sell RCBS 505?

I got a line on a M5 for $40.00 that looks new but the cover needs a good cleaning. I have a good 505 and debating to keep both or sell the 505.

Is there a need for 2 scales? I have check weights so do I need one scale to verify the other?

I wanted a 10-10 but I hear the non micrometer M5 is better. Thank you for your good advice and thanks for looking.

BTW, what's the latest price on tuning a scale from Scott and wait times?

Keep the 505 for sure. I have a 505 and a chargemaster1500 and a set of check weights.

The check weights are a must if you want a piece of mind. Set I have comes with 0.5 gr, 1.0 gr, 2.0 gr, 5.0 gr, 10.0 gr (x2), and 20.0 gr.

M5's are a gold standard in scales. I have three of them and four different digitals. The only one I really trust and is by far the most easy to use, repeatable and accurate with check weights is ...

AnD FX 120i.

Now if you want a decent scale with reasonable accuracy at a good price, just keep the M5 the way it is.

I have two 5•0•5 scales and they are great, probably the most accurate of all my scales. Keep it.

X3 on the M5!! I have one I tuned with a needle pointer and its good to .03 consistently once you know the tricks. It will still work the same 50 years from now. I have 2 more as new in orig boxes that I will tune one of these days.

What are your opinions on the Redding #2 scale.

I remember checking one out a few years ago as its simplicity was attractive but it wasnt 'tuneable' like the old school ones. Cant remember why. But I think its the best of the new versions.

if you can buy an M5 in like new condition jump on it. great price. the cover isnt a big deal use the M5 and keep the 505 for backup

You have to be careful buying used m5. About the only thing you cant 'fix' are the knifes so they need to be examined with a 10x loupe to make sure not damaged by moisture/rust if the beam was left sitting assembled.

Do a search for scott parker on this forum and you will find his email. Forget trying to call him.
