Palma Alliance 2018

An A2 service rifle would ok for mid range prone right?
Someone mentioned sights earlier. I am in the process of assembling my first palma rifle as a tube gun and may need a taller front sight than what i have now.
With fewer and fewer makers of match sights and fewer irons shooters, how long can this go on? If those couple iron sight makers go out of business, no new sights, fewer new shooters etc.

Sure will. There are usually several folks shooting them at mid-range prone matches in the upper midwest.

Don't think for a moment that hasn't been a topic of discussion lately.

Still, for every irons shooter who goes over to using optics there are front & rear sights collecting dust (figuratively speaking I hope) on their shelves at home. Those do come up for sale here & elsewhere.

There're still makers out there whose products work very well for the application (there just aren't as many as there used to be).

I admit to being glad I got started when I did (2003 for high power, 2005 for long range) moving quickly from AR service rifle into match rifle (once I realized the short sight radius's disadvantage for a 53 year-old's eyesight) then single shots for distance. I thoroughly enjoy shooting irons at distance, I'll continue to do so as long as I possibly can.

Were I just starting out now I'd probably be with the PRS crowd... but certainly not at age 69....

Us Australians have won everything!!
TR, F-TR and F-Open :D
Well done and congratulations. Sounds like the conditions were challenging compared to most of our ranges here in the US. How did the conditions compare to Austrailia's ranges? Joining the Palma Alliance. Erud was there and I believe we have several international member.

Yep, the Aussies are putting on a pretty awesome performance - well done guys!!

After 900 yards today, Bailey (AUS) is 1st in TR-A, Kerridge (NZ) 1st in F-Open and Alexander (NZ) 1st in F-TR.

Only one distance fired today, 900 yards, before shooting was delayed and ultimately cancelled due to too much wind. NRA-NZ 2018-national-championship-results/ Of all the years to miss being at Trentham, I can't believe I have missed this year!

Todays results (.pdf) - Some really first rate shooters fired a 40 (out of 50) at 900 yards, which was good enough to move up a few places. Even in the top 10, getting a 45 at 900 yards would hold your place in the standings. And somehow board member Nate Guernsey (USA) got a 50, moving him from 27th to 3rd place in the Belt Series agg, what an amazing shoot Nate!!

I wish I could say I was A) good enough to make the team; and B) there in New Zealand. Im watching results from across the ditch unfortunately.

Conditions in Wellington seem diabolical and having spoken to people who have shot there a couple times it seems that is pretty normal, when the likes of Jim Bailey is being kept to a 40...well that says something. But congratulations to Nate Guernsey for that 50! Extraordinary effort.

I normally shoot in Canberra and our range is set in a valley which can be tricky, but nothing as bad as Wellington by the sounds of it.

I am very much a sling shooter (how I started shooting 6 years ago) and would join but im guilty of heresy...I have a .260Rem with with a big scope on it that I love shooting. Looking at other comments I think that would disqualify me ;)

Guernsey’s 50 at 900 yesterday was awesome. He has been shooting great all week. I was disappointed with my 44-3v, until I started seeing the rest of the scores come in!

I’d say the Alliance is representing pretty darned well down there. Bob Steketee won the 600 yard match outright on Wednesday, the all-Alliance team coached by Brian “Short Pants” Mrnak was 2nd overall (to the Brit team) by only 7 X’s in the Palma team match, and Disco Stu Mackey was in a dead heat for first in the individual Palma yesterday tied with Gary Eliseo. They shot the exact same scores at all 3 yard lines, but Gary Creedmoored him for the match win. Lots of other great performances by other members also.

Next stop, world domination.

Mgunderson, I never heard from the international prospect I think you are asking about. The club is currently sitting at 82 members. Brian M had a sign up sheet at SWN, so there may be some more coming in. There are a total of 8 international members from Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Japan.

I see alot more scopes on prone rifles lately. What are the actual NRA rules for mid and long range prone ?

It depends on the match. The NRA has not yet opened up Prone for any scope any time, and hopefully they never willl. As it stands now, optics are allowed on “Any” rifles in matches designated as “Any/Any”. “Any/Irons” matches require iron sights. Irons can be be used in Anybsight matches, but scopes can’t be used in Irons matches. A Palma rifle by definition must have iron sights, and be chambered in either .308 or .223. Adding a scope to a Palma rifle turns it into an Any rifle, as would clambering it for any cartridge other than those 2.

Hopefully that answers your question?

Thanks Erud

Too early to start the 2018 thread? Heard Erud started a facebook page of the Palma Alliance. I believe 2018 will be the year the Alliance hits 100 members.

Is there anything special to joining? Is facebook a requirement. Alberta Canada slingshooter here.

Cheers
