Loaded Firearms In The Home

Yesterday, I decided to do some housekeeping and organize the safe as well as update the file I keep which lists all of the firearms I own. During the process, I made a mental note of the firearms I have that were loaded. At the end of the day I noted that I had one rifle and five handguns that were loaded, five of them that were not in my safe. I keep my H&K P2000 40 caliber and my Herstal 5.56 in the bedroom. The other handguns were in the TV room and in my reloading room.

I'm divorced and live alone so there's no issue with safety issues with children, The only time children are an issue is when the grandchildren visit and then I put everything in the safe. The guns are not visual, they are kept in discrete locations. I was just wondering if my having a half dozen loaded firearms around the house is an unusually high number or, if other members followed the same practice as myself.

Well, I've only got four loaded. Three pistols, and a shotgun. Loaded, as in rounds in their chambers.

If it isn't loaded, you may as well not even have it.

>> Edited before the Grammar Police nabbed me.

Yup, I've got several around the house all loaded. As for the grand kids I do what my father did to my brother, sister and I. I show them the guns, explain how they work, let the kids hold them (unloaded of course). Explain safety, sight alignment ect and answer their questions. Some weekends we go shoot. They LOVE the Ruger 22.

Now pistols, rifles and shotguns are not a big deal to them. No sneaking into the bedroom and exploring draws and stuff. Usually their visit starts something like this "Pop-Pop can we go shooting today?"

MY cz 40B stays ready at all times, shop owner, home right behind shop, rest on the nitestand, had two attempts at break ins,FN FAL lock and loaded allways, lots of fire power

The last response pegged my BS meter.

Back in the day, I used to drive up several times a year to visit Elmer Keith at his home in Salmon. The first time I was invited in he informed me that every firearm not in a vault was loaded. He said it kept visitors from wanting to handle them. I have had the same experience over the last 50+ years in my home.
I am married, younger family members are frequent visitors. They are all well versed in safe handling of firearms, and do not touch unless an adult clears them first.

Let's just say I don't think you are in the minority when it comes to having multiple loaded firearms strategically stashed around your residence. I keep several, both long guns and handguns in key locations.

I never leave my house unoccupied without all guns being locked up in safes. Someone breaks in to your home while it is unoccupied, steals a firearm and then commits a crime or even worse, you're home and shoot the perp. Now put your bravado aside and hope you have good home insurance and enough money to pay your attorney fees when the criminal (yep, that's right, the criminal), the criminals family or the crime victim sue you. If you live in a liberal state, you're most likely going to lose. Remember, you're innocent until you run out of money.

Your assuming the perp leaves without a sheet over them ?

It seems very foreign to me to have a firearm hidden around the house not in a safe let alone loaded.. am curious do you guys have loaded guns around the house because you’ve had a personal experience with home invasion or do you live in an area that is partial to crimes that require you to have loaded guns ready to go??

Cheers Rushty

CCW permits and "packing heat" are the latest fads in the U.S. gun world. I used to be able to count on one hand how many people I knew that carried. Now it's like, who isn't carrying. Been watching gun fads come and go for over 50 years. This is another one. Having said that, for business owners making night deposits or carrying large amounts of cash, those that must move about or do business in the ghettos and suburban drug dealers, it's pretty much mandatory.:p:D

Rushty, Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. I have two loaded pistols in the house. One on the night stand and one on my dresser. The one on the dresser is my carry gun so when my pants go on it goes on. I live in a rural setting on a dead end road. Only one break in has occurred in the last 20 years and it was a mile from my place. It was probably the former resident (just a hunch from a retired cop).
