Loaded Firearms In The Home

Guys, I'm not making any judgement calls here. We're all big boys and to each his own. Just giving a heads up on the financial pitfalls that MAY await someone who fires a gun during the commission of a crime or allows a firearm to fall in to the wrong hands. Example, homeowner has multiple loaded firearms in the home. Neighborhood kids come over, one discovers a firearm, pulls the trigger and kills or injures someone. Homeowner most likely will be liable under the attractive nuisance doctrine. This happens on a regular basis in the inner cities. Having insurance policies for these cases is a wise move.

Hate to admit it, but Hog is right (not bustin on YOU hog, just the fact it stinks you are right). Been the subject of litigation. Shirtbag that sued me was lawfully arrested, injured as a result of his own assault on me (I won that encounter emphatically) and despite being in Federal prison sued me for 10 Million and it dragged out for 13 years. Had I been on the hook for my defense, I would have been bankrupt while he sat on his dirty arse in prison, filing one after another motions. And I didn't even shoot him! In fact, the issue that dragged out was not even an "injury". It was whether I pepper sprayed him after he was handcuffed or before. (For the record it was while he was in one cuff, fighting the whole time, punched me, ran from me, and while we were ground fighting...I had justification to beat his freaking head into the pavement but I de-escalated and sprayed him (and me!) to get him into cuffs.
So, the idea of having specific insurance for protection in case you do shoot someone, even righteously, is well advised. You can go to the poor house perfectly innocent.

snert, for lack of better words, that just plain sucks! But it's reality! When a guy in a wheelchair shoots himself with a handgun, then waves it around and refuses the command of a police officer to drop it and then is shot and killed BEFORE he does anymore damage (there were many people with no sense standing around watching) and his family gets $1,500,000 for their "grief", it's no wonder the quality of LEOs is going down the tubes. Who in the hell would want that job?

Ya, and after 13 years the federal judge agreed to hear it, and promised a payout of $1.00 to the defendant and his two new attorneys. Told them they could figure out how to break the one odd penny into three parts to make it equal at 33 1/3 cent each upon successful litigation. They finally went away.

To the OP,everyone needs to figure it out for themselves.I keep one loaded revolver, usually a 4" Diamondback as the house gun(it's my oldest sons,2nd handgun, and his 10th Bday present).

Only thing else is one of a cpl EDC rifles. These are slickarsed bolt action cast bullet rigs......and rarely out of my sight.

Raised four boys.Took in an equal, maybe more number of other kids who for known reasons were left out in the cold. The boys all were shooting from diapers.Had high perf archery tackle of their own, including baby broadheads homade from circ saw blades.Had a jacked up Wiemeraner (trained) that would tear the bumper off a '54 Buick if you looked cross ways at "her" boys. They had more land and streams/rivers to explore and get hurt on than describing does justice to.They held up their end of being responsible very well.

Full on pro shop/s here were always a risk somewhat to kids? but not really. The kids were all taught to gas weld from pretty early on(natural male affinity to lighting chit up).All the other equipment has sophisticated guards/dust collection/fixturing coverage on most of their real estate. There was always too much cool stuff for them outside to be couped up in the shop?Heck, they were tearing up and camping on the A.T. by themselves from very early.....but you didn't hear that from me,haha.

A .40 cal PT100 chambered and de-cocked on safe with a light in the bedroom. A Mossberg 930 12g w/light also in the bedroom (none chambered but with 5 in the extended magazine tube, 6 on the stock, and an ammo belt with 45 more rounds.) and 9mm PT111 in my desk or close by wherever I'm at, not chambered unless I'm carrying concealed. Everything is locked up in the gun safes but all have full magazines in them, but not chambered. There are no kids in the house and everything is locked up and secured before we ever have company. I'm extra nice to the wife, just incase!

Years ago I was in Georgia visiting my brother. He raced dirt late models and we over to the gas station where they kept the car. It was just outside Macon. The owner showed me his pets. He had rattlesnakes. He said he got tired of getting robbed all the time. He left them loose every night when he closed. In the morning he gathered them up. One morning when he gathered them, he knew one bit somebody. He said from the point on, no one robbed him anymore. Word must of traveled. Matt

As I understand my state's relevant law, the actor in a such a crime has no standing to bring a civil action.
Yes, but notice that every time a thug gets killed in the act, whether by police or a homeowner, it turns out he was an honor roll student just about to enter the seminary, who was the sole support of all his nineteen siblings and dirtbag parents. Even if you don't get sued, you are publicly branded a psycho. Still, I'd rather be a live psycho than a dead victim. I have a .44 and a speedloader in easy reach of the bed (wife has an issue with loaded guns in the house, and I pick my battles). I also keep a katana handy. If I lived in a more, shall we say, diverse area I'd definitely have loaded guns around the house.

Pitch black in my house at night. No street lights in sight. 2 big black dogs inside the dark house. Come and get some:D
A thermal viewer like a FLIR would be nice in near total darkness. I want one but hate the idea of nearly $600 is a bit much.

Very true. Say an 18 year old thug high on drugs with a long record of crimes breaks into your house with a knife and you shoot him. What does the headlines read?

School age child that was planning on attending college next year was mercilessly gunned down in a house occupied by a middle aged gun enthusiast. And he wasn't even armed, probably entering the home by mistake. The home owner was a member of the hate group NRA. He had a cache of military style weapons and assault rifles plus explosives and bomb making supplies (if you reload) and enough ammo to kill hundreds of people. What did this guy have so much dangerous ordinance for? Was he planning something big? We can all sleep a little easier knowing that he was stopped and the police confiscated it all.

going back to the OP, make sure you know what firearms are loaded and what aren't for emergency use. If I owned any firearms, I might keep it simple--all pistols always loaded with one in the chamber--thus no question during stressful situation. Or something like that. Keep it simple.

I have loaded guns in the house. I’m in the country with one neighbor and have a couple cow dogs outside the house that bark anytime something is amiss. I also travel a lot for work and my wife knows how to use the Beretta 1301 that is loaded and hid by the bed and her handgun, a little Smith 38. I’m not going to leave a gun on the other side of the house in a safe when deed goes down.

These decisions should be up to the home owner. To me, I’d rather be armed and take the risks that come with being armed than be unarmed and take the risks of being unarmed. I carry insurance that would help in several scenarios if some ever did happen. Quite honestly I’d rather deal with the aftermath of a self defense event than get buried with the worms.

A little estate planning and investigating can help a great deal in protecting your hard earned assets. My home and land is in a trust owned by my kids, that’s one example of a layer of protection.

If you choose to carry I think your making a bad judgement if you elect not to take some classes on the subject. Some of today’s instructors do an amazing job educating people on the subject. Many decide not to carry at all after taking a class or two, many other take more classes, practice more and take it a bit more seriously.

A close friend of mine recently started packing a sidearm everywhere he goes. He’s 21, I practically raised him. He came over for a steak the other night and after getting quizzed by me on the subject he stopped carrying and signed up for a basic CCW class. His intentions are good, he’s knowledge is lacking. BTW I have new method of cooking steaks that is unreal, my family and friends say it rivals Ruth Chris, I think they are full of it but they are mighty tasty.:D

To each their own. It is America
