Newest addition... Tikka T3x .223....

That's how my stock thread started. I liked the Tikkas but hated the stock. Some one let me shoot a Master Sporter. I loved it. I bought a few, but they're EXPENSIVE!! I studied the stock for a while and decided to take a shot at making one, with a few minor improvements. Once I made a few, I figured I'd share the process.

And thank you for sharing all that information. Looks like a project that I'm going to have to try my hand at just to see if I can do it.

The AT One landed today. I got everything changed over tonight and I quite like it. Was holding my breath when I saw the box on my porch though. UPS was not very kind to it.

Amazingly enough, the stock was just fine.

Push button stock adjustments work well. The adjustable cheek riser and LOP are the main reasons I got this stock in the first place.

Checking out the mill work reveals that it is very well done. The factory bottom metal ...er...plastic fits very well. I have Atlasworx bottom metal ordered but it's on the slow boat so not sure when it will be here.

Very snug fit on the steel recoil lug and the action fits the mill work perfectly.

Free float on the barrel passes the dollar bill test with flying colors.

There are some nice touches like this little milled recess for your finger at the bolt release.

Overall I am very well pleased. Can't see how one can go wrong for $200 shipped.

What is the weight difference? Looks very, very nice!

I didn't weigh them separately but the Boyd's is heavier than the original. Very nice balance. I added 1 lb to the butt on the original to achieve the same balance as it has with the Boyd's.

Got the target grips today. Basically they are fatter and more vertical. I like the feel of it. Guess we will see how it goes once I can actually shoot it.

The original...

The grips have a boss made into each that locks into a milled recess in the stock. A single screw goes through the grip, the stock and into the other side grip to secure them.

And the target grips...

The original stock weighs 2 lbs. The Boyd's is 3 lbs. The bulk of the weight in the Boyd's is towards the butt which is exactly what the rifle needed. It was very muzzle heavy with the original that's why I added the 1 lb. block of duct seal to the butt. That balanced it out well with the center point just ahead of the magazine. Same exact balance point with the Boyd's.

Range! Range! Range! Shoot that thang! Need to see a group or 2 !

Well, living where I do....

Our local 1000 yard range just closed. Have to go out to a friend's property just to shoot 100 yards so I'm on his schedule not mine. Very irritating situation. Hopefully can get out there next weekend. We're coating the new F/TR .308 stock tomorrow so I'll hopefully have it back together next week. Hoping to shoot it next weekend also. So many rifles all dressed up with no place to go. :(

I use to belong to a 600 yard range that was and still is awesome, about an hour and half away. Long story short, I am not a member now. What to do? I thought and thought and came up with a place of my buddy's that, under perfect conditions, I can go to 600 yards, about 2 miles away from my house. I only shoot there on special occasions for drop confirmations. Maybe 6 times a year. There are neighbors about 1/4 to 1/2 mile away that I do not want to disturb so I don't loose my honey-hole.
Someone close to you has something they need from you. What would that be? My something is coyote population control and land stewardship. I look after their property. (Cows out/fence down, etc.). I don't want to shoot their turkeys, deer, etc. Just their song dogs. If they have a gun or ammo issue, I try to be an asset to them. Just throwing out some food for thought.
People travel ridiculous amounts to hunt for a very limited amount of time, only to overlook that if they would use their social skills, they can get what they want in their own backyard. People are social critters. It's not impossible to talk your way into something that is in your advantage. Just be honest. It just might work.

All good suggestions. There are some friends working on places to shoot now so hopefully soon we will have more options. I too am trying not to wear out my welcome at my friends place. Topography here is mountainous so wide open spaces in which to shoot very far that aren't packed with a bazillion trees are not super plentiful. I talked with another friend that has some land. I'm going to visit his place and see if there is any way to safely shoot farther there.

Our 1000 yard range, 1140 actually, was truly in the middle of no where about a 45 minute drive for me. It was packed out every day it was open but even there civilization caught up and it had to close. Places with a 4 or 5 mile buffer zone that the authorities want are getting harder and harder to come by. There are pay to play gun clubs within a couple of hours drive but one is not even taking new applications and there is only 300 yards at the other.
