Mule deer Bullet

I have some Sierra 160 gr TMK bullets loaded up in my 7mm WSM that I use for shooting steel. Will they work for Nevada Mule deer ?

or any Sierra hunting bullet,,,,I have used 150-160 gr SBT's for years in a 7mm rem mag with perfect results,,,Roger

People need to do their homework before making recommendations. Sierra TMK's are known for having very thin jackets; translation, you won't get penetration, these bullets will fragment and blow up. Check the review given on Midway USA, they specifically state that these bullets are not hunting bullets and can only be used for varmints at best. They are not designed to penetrate the muscle and bone of a mule deer and give clean kills. The manufacturer themselves clearly state that these bullets are not designed for hunting.

Sierra makes a bullet called GameKing that is specifically designed for hunting large animals such as Mule deer. Purchase a box of these and hunt with confidence. Don't ruin your hunt with the wrong bullet.

Perfect topic since I just bought some of the
168 TMKs from Eric off the classifieds last summer/early fall. This is not a 7mm(284) but rather a 30 caliber bullet I use in a 308. Those that say it's not a hunting bullet by classification are 100% correct, they are not. When these bullets are loaded in brass at my home, they are both target and hunting ammo. These 168s loaded for my 308 hold .3 out to 600 yards. I've harvested 2 white tailed deer with them and both folded like a washcloth...very fast. One bullet went thru the shoulder and did some damage. Destroyed muscle, bone and hide going in and exiting. The other deer had only some ribs and buckshot inside a bit. Lungs and a portion of the heart were blown up. Bullet never exited. Found a large portion of it actually mushroomed but not complete in the opposite side of the hide. That was a fairly large buck(188lb dressed) but both were at rest. First deer at 370 yds and second at 540. Again for those that do not feel these bullets are not for deer or larger game, do not use them. Continue to use what gives you confidence. Also remember there limitations regarding range accuracy. Those two deer could have been harvested by nosler partitions from my rifle easily as the ranges were ok. I know from personal use of match bullets that they DO perform very well on deer. Nobody's pushing anyone to use match bullets but at the same time beating the issue up that they don't work is ridiculous.

What ever you shooting at use the appropriate bullet. Target bullets are for targets. Hunting bullets are for hunting..
Yeah exactly!!!.........WAIT! so when a company takes their vld target bullet and puts it in a new box and re names it Hunting vld, is it still a target bullet? or is it somehow magically transformed into a hunting bullet. Or was it also a hunting bullet when it was called a target bullet...........o_O I'm so confused have i been killing deer all these years with the wrong bullet that performed flawlessly for my application or could some bullets be one in the same. To complicate things a rep at another company advised me that their polymer tip target bullet is "fantastic" on deer, not long after they were then advertises as being suited for that purpose. Decisions decisions.

284winner - glad you posted re: the TMK...I will try some for hunting this year. I've had fantastic results hunting with Amax's...the TMK's should perform similarly.

If you showed up in my hunting camp with target bullets when I was a guide, you would not hunt. Unless somebody else in camp had the same caliber in a hunting bullet and was willing to share.None of the guys I guided with(nor I) savoured the idea of chasing down wounded game in the mountains. dedogs

I guess I will stir the pot. I grew up on a 6 section cattle ranch in Nevada and have killed more mule deer than I can remember. Beef was to sell and deer was to eat. I killed a damn nice one last year between contracts in Afghanistan where I have been going off and on since 2002. Point being I have shot a hell of alot of things in my life and the one thing I do know is its sure as hell not what you hit them with but where you hit them. If that bullet shoots best in your gun use it and know your limitations as a shooter. There is no such thing as a magic bullet. Just my 2 cents and that's probably exactly what it's worth.

Ironworker pm me if you would like. If I am home myself or my brother would be more that happy to help you anyway we can.

The Amax and Berger's both have been my first choice long range game bullets. Love partitions but only out so far. TMKs perform exactly as the Amax.

Shooting someone's reloads in your gun is very dangerous. Sure hope your insurance was good and paid up.
