Seating depth Hornady ELD-X bullet

7mm WSM 162gr ELD-X How far away from rifling ? I recall A-Max bullets like being seated into the lands. Sierra 160 gr TMK I seat .020 away from lands. The Hornady bullets will be my deer bullet .

I did no load work up with the 143 ELD-X in my 260 , it's to short in the throat for these bullets . I wanted to shoot a couple just to see how they shot . I picked a powder charge , and loaded with a .018 jump . this load shot three shots under an inch at 100 yards . I'd say a .015 to .020 jump would be a good place to start .

I think you will have to experiment with your rifle. I am shooting them in a 270 at .010 off and it was a struggle to get them to shoot. In my 6XC the 103's I had to go to .040 off just to get a group at all and I am going to go .060 and .070 and .090. I know a guy shooting them 162 at .090 off and another at .120 off and they shoot well...I think they are very sensitive to seating depth and they do seem to like a lot of jump.

Ironworker,

Everyone and their rifle will be an exception because most chambers are different as are the lands and grooves and velocities. That's why you really need to do the testing with your rifle and chamber to see just where your bullet is happiest. It might be a good idea to see if there are any similarities between others experiences but for the most part you have to do the testing yourself.

I recall A-Max bullets like being seated into the lands.

The first batch of AMAX I shot were jumped 0.100" to the lands and shot the best of any other seating with that chamber and load. See what I mean? ;)

Regards.

As Kurz stated...Every rifle will be different. All though I'm reading a rather broad spread in this thread, mine shoot a single ragged hole anywhere between .025-.030 off
