What's your favorite varmint rifle?

Varminting flavor of the past several years is actually a pistol--bought this funky put-together 22 pellet pistol from a guy in Mindanao PI, who shipped it to our house in Bicol PI. We used it for a couple years rat (daga) hunting there, at the local dump (basura) and now for birds (ibon) on our yearly PI trips. Couldn't believe how accurate the little sucker is with local pellets, and as fun as it gets for ratting. The locals refer to it as "guapo" (cool). The guy I bought it from steel epoxied a Weaver base to the barrel, and I stuck a Swift 2X pistol scope on it, and it's a kick to shoot--

I like to see people's favorite rifles, And how they are set up.

Mine is a stock savage model 25 in 223 i just up graded the optic to a Leupold mark 4 not too long ago. It fits me perfect right down to cheek well.. it's taken hundreds of woodchucks.
Hard to beat a Swift. Just my two cents.. Tommy Mc..

My custom 257 Banshee. A Remington with an 11 1/2" X 1 7/8ths" sleeve in an old Lee Six stock. The first answer to the Unlimited Class. I got the sleeve and stock from an old gunsmith named Manley Oakley in Tacoma about 25 years ago, and Steve Kostanich built it. Scope is a Leupold 6.5-20X Premier Reticle boosted to 18-42X and put vertical and horizontal cross hairs on along with his FFP conversion. I killed quite a few Rockchucks with it in the 1990's, including several past 1000 yards. I know, I know, I need to learn how to post photos here. It's Viper Blue.

Back when I was younger, I shot varmints quite a lot and favored 700 Remingtons with custom barrels. Most were .22 caliber (have used .222,.223, .22BR. .22PPC , .220 swift, .225 Winchester, and .222 Magnum). I have owned several that were very accurate but my favorite was a Rem 700 with Hart barrel and wooden 40X stock in .222 Magnum. It brought carnage to many fields in Wyoming back in the 90's. I have owned some other than Rem 700's . My first varmint rifle was a pre-WWII Winchester model 70 equipped with a Douglas (Timken steel) bull barrel and a 6-24X Bausch and Lomb scope. It was chambered in .220 Swift and had a heavy, laminated stock. It was superbly accurate, but I shot few varmints with it because of its weight. Also, I owned a Ruger #1 in .220 Swift and a SAKO vixen in .223. These rifles and a few others accounted for many prairie dog deaths about 25 years ago. Good shooting....James

I don't have a favorite, I like them all. Here's a some I tend to grab more often than others.

First pic. .222 Winchester heavy varmint factory rifle that shoots in the .2s, the twisted barrel is a 6x47 bighorn action most accurate rifle I own, next 6.5x47 defiance action sporter, next is Sako 75 18in 6BR, last is a Sako 20beggs

Second pic - Sako 22BR, Sako 222 vixen, 222 16in barreled remington, Sako 6ppc factory sporter barrel repeater, Kidd 10/22 shoots good enough to make me sound like a liar.

If they don't shoot under half inch they don't stay. Most shoot much better.

I like calling with shorter barrels if shots are under 300, we have longer shots covered too.:D Thats enough for today.

I am coming to your house. I see guns, a bar and a pool table. Can your bride cook? :)

I do most the cooking, your welcome anytime.

Well, I looked up Taylor. Nice area! Someday when I move west I will make it a point to come on down. And if you are ever so addle-headed to visit NY, upstate is beautiful in summer, if it is not raining, so stop by anytime. I also do the cooking. Hope you like steak and grilled stuff. Hope someday to be in OK or CAnon City CO.

I like the Cooper Model 38 Montana Varminter or Varminter. I have a 22 Hornet Montana Varminter that I like a lot.

If you ever do make it I live close to all kinds of calling and prairie dog shooting. I've never been to New York, never shot a ground hog, never say never though.

its hard for me to imagine not shooting a wood chuck/ ground hog, that is like the next best thing to coffee for me ... although i have always said prairie dog hunting is on my bucket list to do, just seems like a great time. i hear there isnt a huge difference, just generally alot more prairie dogs running around than what you see wood chcuks.

I have killed every varmint there is west of the Rockies. Even the more difficult coati mundi and a couple of lions that I called in, no hounds. I go to Colorado every fall and shoot Rock Chucks, probably the same animal really. Those of you who enjoy shooting wood chucks would probably really enjoy shooting Rock Chucks, aka marmots, above the tree line in the Rockies. The shots are as long as you want.
