The story can go in reverse.

I had an old salt warming up for a long range match shooting a fancy 6.5x47 with an S&B scope and hand loads telling me my barrel break in procedure was stupid, then I started shooting groups every bit as good as his, first time out with an entire rifle that cost less than his scope, factory ammo, a trigger I had never used before, etc.

To be honest, he was probably only 20-25 years older than me and I wasn't exactly young at the time but age isn't a reliable indicator for foolishness.

This is a Remington Model 700 BDL short action in 7mm-08. It has the original 22" barrel with a real walnut stock. The scope is an M8-12X Leupold I bought new in 1980. "I have never seen one of those before" he says.

I've been messing with a wildcat basically 7-08 but with the shoulder pushed forward 3.5mm. Enough juice to push Berger 180 Hybrids to 2,800 with no pressure.

Started with a 1:9 30" barrel, working with a 1:8.5 for the past month or so. Starting out with fresh brass too this time rather than match-worn 308 Palma brass.

26 years (?) after you earned your Mastercard Don I fired a 200-15x on a high end target at Winnequah Gun Club (Lodi WI) with that cartridge in an Any/Any match... with match sights

Never understood the 308 love. Why anyone would mess with it over the far and away superior 30-06 or 300 Savage, other than that they like having what the military has. Looking at it in that light, the 308 is the original tacti-cool choice!

Last week a youngun was shooting a bar 3006 next to me , he shot 40 round's and never hit the paper. His barrel must have been super hot at that point. I told him to shoot while i looked for the dust. His shot was 28" high at 100 yds. He had crap base's and crap rings so i told him to get talley light weight rings and then his problem will be solved.

I don't think that changing rings and bases will exactly solve the problem. If you're 28 inches high at 100 yards at some point you will need to crank about a minus 28 moa if you have that in your scope. This would have been a good opportunity to educate a youngster about sighting in with 3-4 shots, scope adjustments, base and ring cants, etc.

I always find it more satisfying to use my limited knowledge to help someone succeed than watch them fail.

Oh yeah the mighty .30-06! .308 performance with .300 win mag recoil. A shooters dream!

Savage made rifle rounds? I thought they were famous for confusing action lengths, ugly barrel nuts, and ridiculous rifle nomenclature??

I think you missed my point. If a kid fires 40 consecutive shoots 28 inches high on the targets at 100 yards, they need more help than just "get a new set of rings."

My platform is usually a 6 foot fiberglass ladder, some times an 8 footer. I like a couple of saw horses and a few scaffold boards best though.

Shilen bbl & trigger. 10X US Optics scope. Have gone to 1000 yds.
Heavier bullets are better. It's a great rifle. I think 22lr, .243, .308 are all needed. oh, .45 ACP.

yup, that was carefully balanced. the barrel M 24 1:11 is heavy. I am no expert - -Shilen barrels + triggers are very good quality.

That's OK, F Open shooters don't understand us either. You have to be a little bit of a masochist to compete with a .308. By in large, F-TR shooters are the best guys and gals on earth. That said, those Open shooters are pretty good cats too.

It really is an accurate cartridge. I like the Lapua 155g Scenars/silver/moly (?). Expect many dozens are rolling their eyes, or maybe - in agreement. the freight train of calibers. hauling a load + delivering.
