The story can go in reverse.
I had an old salt warming up for a long range match shooting a fancy 6.5x47 with an S&B scope and hand loads telling me my barrel break in procedure was stupid, then I started shooting groups every bit as good as his, first time out with an entire rifle that cost less than his scope, factory ammo, a trigger I had never used before, etc.
To be honest, he was probably only 20-25 years older than me and I wasn't exactly young at the time but age isn't a reliable indicator for foolishness.
