What's your platform?

If the heads were from one of your sea barges I totally get it. I have a friend that is a machinist and he told me he was bringing a set of pistons in from the port that needed the ring grooves made bigger cause the original rings weren't made any more. Eight of these pistons filled the back of his chevy P/U. They were bigger than a 5 gallon bucket.

When i worked for GE i had to go work on a few big boats while underway. Only difference is those piston engines wouldnt cut it, they use gas turbines now if they need power. The old reciprocating engines are so 1800’s!!:p Ge has a few recip engine shops and ive seen some of those pistons you speak of. They have lathes that you ride in a chair with the carriage. They take off chips as big as your arm. Theres some big stuff out there

"Darn Ebb, I've had to use scaffolding to pull heads from engines."

Along with a bridge or gantry crane in some cases I'd bet.

GE still making the EMD, they just went to different levels for carbon discharge. A 20 cylinder 645 E2 coupled to a Falk gearbox will put out about 5,000 HP, and now you have 2 of these.
Pull anything you want across the world.

I used to do some work for the captain of Roger Penske's yacht. It had the best of both worlds. Two 16V149 Detroits and a gas turbine in between. He told me that they went to the Greek islands to dive and after crossing the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean sea they were exhausted and went to bed early. After a few hours they were awakened by first one then the other engine starting up. My friend pull the alarm and the crew armed them selves and searched the boat. Only to find that some engineer in Detroit had started the engines by a satellite link from the D deck electronics system at 3 in the morning Greek time. If my friend and the crew could have got ahold of him they would have done great bodily harm.

Yes too much thinking today and not enough doing by youngster's. If you can not lead a running buck or rabbit and hit it for the pot you suck as a shooter. If you need a calculator, a smart phone, ballistic tables and a bench you need to go back to square one and learn "marksmanship" all over. While gear has changed a little since WWI the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship have not changed much at all.

Like all skills from golfing to baseball to martial arts and shooting you have to master the fundamentals before moving on to the more advanced stuff. Try to move on with out a strong mastery in the fundamentals and you just end up wasting time and money with little to show for it!

My Mom's Dad fought in WWI and I am sure if he were alive today you could give him an M4 and with very little additional training be fully combat effective with it. They worked out how to use long guns, sub machine guns, shotguns, machine guns, hand to hand, clubs, knives in WWI. Other than refinement in optics, bullets shapes and powders shooting at a moving target and still target was already well understood.

Fundamentals+Confidence+Knowing your gear!

You need to be able to at the minimum shoot standing, kneeling, squatting, sitting on the ground and prone before you even consider shooting of a bench!

My parents generation got to take rifles to school and hunt rabbits for the pot in the suburbs. I've heard that my late Uncle could hit them on the run shooting from the hip.

I never got to do that.

By your measure, I suck as a shooter but I can shoot groups at 1,000 yards.

Both things can be equally true but I don't like being blamed for lacking opportunities that many in that older generation took for granted.

I want to shoot as well as I can and I'm going to take every advantage I can get my hands on.
