Best way to weigh a rifle?

Whats the best way to weigh a rifle to check to see if itd make weight for F-open or FTR?

Put the bipod on and weight it by hanging from a scale???

Bathroom scales kind of hard to use because you gotta hold the rifle upright which messes with the numbers...

Any postal type scale that you can pick-up for about 30 bucks will work. I picked up an Accuteck W-8250 that weighs up to 50lbs for that price. I own ten Bench rifles and I'm always swapping scopes, barrels, ect., so I need one.
I agree, and will say that you can buy a very accurate scale for very little money nowadays. That said, in our sport, a decent parts counting scale is as handy as toilet paper, for weighing bullets etc. Watch ebay...I see them for around $100 occasionally.

Your bathroom scale goes down to ounces, accurately?
When I weighed my FTR rifle it wasn't close to max so I didn't check the accuracy.
However, after reading your post, out of curiosity I just checked it;
me, +/ - a 2.5 oz candy bar (only known weight object handy) tilts the arm about 1/8 bubble. The 4 oz hashmarks on the balance are about 3/32" apart. So it is possible to adjust for the weight of the candy bar.

Cool, good for you. For <$30 (plus S&H) I think its well worth it to make double dang sure my gun is going to make weight before I fly or travel to big matches. YMMV.

They used to use one like this for FCNC in years past. Not sure what they are using now. Mine works pretty well ;)

I also purchased a similar scale for weighing my rifles. Of course it can also be used to weigh other things such as shipping packages on occasion, but they are of far less importance IMO ;). Even though I generally use this scale infrequently, I am very happy that I decided to purchase it, no regrets at all. When I show up at a match where my rifle will be weighed, I know without any doubt that it is under the limit. For me, peace of mind carries a pretty fair dollar value.

Used to have a butcher who would let me sneak in after hours, use his commercial certified scales & print me a label at 1c per.

I bought a scale with a remote readout on eBay. Cost was under $30.00 delivered. I use it along with my UPS and USPS Software to calculate shipping weights and costs. Easily holds a rifle and in checking the weight against certified check weights, it is on the money. From under an ounce up to 110 pound capacity and has Tare Weight feature if you want to make a special gun holder to sit on top of it.

If you are looking for scales to weigh your rifles you don't have to over think this operation. A good digital scale is all you need such as My Weigh 30 or 35 scales. If you need more than that get a check weight. I think that scale calls for a ten pound check weight. Check your zero every time you power up your scale. If you are working on rifles, pistols, or whatever for others you might want to invest in a better scale and certified odor even verified weights. Nah, verified are even more expensive. I checked into a set ( 10 pound, 3 pound, and half pound ) of certified weights about 10-12 years ago. Those would have cost well over $100.00 so I went with plain old simple check weights. That's good enough for what we do. I do have a couple check weights that go to .0002 and if I ever send a man to the moon I may use them. They were free but really useless, overkill, for what we do. "Remember, even with the field null placed on the electrical supply wire, outside influences may affect the accuracy of your scale". I think that was the warning on the scale.

I agree, that will give you the most accurate reading if your looking to make weight for competition

When I first got the "Ultraship" scale that's in the photo I posted earlier, the scale's accuracy needed to be tested.
Competing at Pella, Iowa in 1000 yd. Benchrest (2008), we had to weigh our Light guns (max. 17 lb.) and we also had to
weigh our Factory Class rifles (max. 15 lb.). So it was my intention to test the scale in that weight range. 15# to 17#

Taking one of my rifles into our local Post Office was out of the question. I had an empty cardboard box that I began
filling with boxes of bullets. This wasn't ammunition, but boxes of bullets. It didn't take many boxes of bullets to get
the total weight of the box of bullets to be between those two weights. The recorded weight of the box of bullets was then
checked at the local Post Office. They were close enough to give me confidence in the "Ultraship's" accuracy.

In all the years since then (2008) the scale still gives similar readings to what the match scales have reported for my rifles.
That would include shooting at BRRC of St. Louis, Vapor Trail Valley, Yukon, Pella and Big Piney.

Just ordered the Accuteck-8250 at Amazon $17!! Thanks' Jim

I take mine to the local supermarket butcher shop and weigh it on their scale. Certified and good to .01 LB.

Why not just lay it across the bathroom scale?
If you at close to weight limit, I would suggest a scale as described in post #2, and you will be laying it across the scale.
