What did you kill this fall, and what did you use?

I had to pack 90% of this bull out on my own. It was about 1000yds down a 45 degree slope. Probably the worst pack out on a elk I've ever done and I've had some doozies in the past.

Great hunting! Packing an elk out 1000 yards downhill is getting off easy. Keep hunting elk and trust me, one year soon, that will be the one of the easier packs you'll remember ;) Ive packed them out much further distances on the same type of steep slopes. It's tough on the knees going down steep slopes with that much weight on your back, but I'd rather do that than flat ground. Nice thing about the steep hills is that it's easy to just sit down on the side of the hill and allow it to take the weight of your pack off your back. Lot easier to get back up too. Had to pack my bull out 4.5 miles using an old logging road this year. Dropped down into a valley, then uphill over a ridge on the other side and back down into the next valley. All on foot, no motorized vehicles allowed at all. Now that was a doozie ;)

I have a friend with property in the shotgun zone in Michigan, the state recently started allowing "pistol cartridge rifles". So I designed the case to meet the ruling and function in a Remington 700, rimless. Her father said I showed "a commitment " to hunting there. I work for a gunsmith, we have made three, all 700's with a straight grip stock like win 94.
I would have used 300 grains but I would either need to ream the cases deeper or lengthen the throat. Right now it is working good with the 265's so I am not messing with success. I am getting 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards with a 5x scope.
Will post a picture.

Our river bottom on the edge of city limits is a 'restricted weapon' area due to homes being along the river. Only allows traditional muzzle loader, archery weapon (bow or croasbow), shotguns, and handguns. The catch is that the handgun cartridges must be SAAMI straight wall rounds originally designed for a handgun and the barrel cannot be longer than 10 inches. So no wildcats or handgun rounds in rifles for us in that area. My 44 mag has an 8 3/8" barrel and will hold groups around 2.5 to 3 inches at 100 yards with open sights. Though I would have to have an absolute perfect rest to pull a 100 yards shot off on an animal. Pretty comfortable off hand at 50 yards. Haven't hunted with it yet, but really itching to get it done one of these years.

It was 1000yds down off the top of a 45 degree slope. I had to pack it up hill to the last 4 wheeler trail before you hit the river, not down hill. If you know anything about the breaks of the Salmon River you know they are steep as hell. That is where that bull was shot.

Last year we shot 3 bulls 4 miles from one road and 3 miles from another. I made that 7 mile trek 3 days in row. We got dropped off on one road and picked up on the other which was a 46 mile drive to get to. 1 day was with a 1/4 elk in my day pack and the next 2 days was with 1/2 an elk on a pack frame each day. The second day my hunting partner stabbed himself in the quad right above the knee cap and it went all the way to the bone.

Trust me.....when it comes to crappy pack outs I've done plenty of them. I've shot a lot of elk and I still have another elk tag in UT that's good until Jan 31st. I had a 4th tag that I didn't have time to hunt on because I had to make two trips to get my wife's moose and I headed to AZ Coues hunting the end of the elk season. The season was only 2 weeks long.

No horns, but ended up with 77lbs of meat. Killed them with my Savage 220 bolt action 20 gauge slug gun. Those 3" Remington Accutips sure do a good job. Gonna make brats, hot sticks and summer sausage.View attachment 995956
That is the best eating right there. My 8 point was so tough I just saved the lions, made some burger and then made some very good jerky with the majority of it. Which is no big thing to me as I love deer jerky. I didn't make much burger because even it was a bit tough.

Yes, I braze it in a hot pan and then can it. The brazing helps retain the flavor better without cooking the meat. It is cooked in the pressure canning process too much anyway.
