Case volume in grains of water,( bullet length, if a boat tail, the small diameter and length of taper, large diameter) case length, Cartridge overall length, barrel length.

Also, what powder you are using or would like to use.

Being playing with QL for a few years now and have had some real good results.

Sounds like the 6mm AI is a shooter.

Um, could those be Hornady 87-gr Spire Points, which they were making in the '70s and '80s? Hornady was somewhat unique, AFAIK, in featuring spire point bullets.

I'm not aware Speer ever made any spire point, or any 87-gr 6mm bullet, unless it was before the mid-70s.

I'm kind of partial to Speer, since I grew up in Lewiston, and was in high school with ol' Vernon's grandsons. Jack O'Connor lived there as well. I love Speer TNTs for varmint hunting, a "best buy" for the price, and surprisingly accurate.

Project complete. Did a 15 shot break in with carbon and copper clean as we go. Load was 41gr of a 40 year old can of win 760 and some jammed speer 87gr bullets I was givin eons ago. All 15 shots into 1 hole at 100yds, (truthfully about 70 cal. when done but 1 hole all the same). Not bad for a junker load. Today out with a ladder test with Matrix 105gr and Fed match primers with H4831sc from 45.9gr. to 48.9gr. The whole ladder was in a 2 1/2" square at 216yds, (200m). Shots 48.3, .6 and .9 came in at .229moa with velocity average of 3193fps. Any 3 in the bunch was almost as good. No pressure signs, nada, nil. Primers from start to finish look near the same. Smooth bolt lift throughout. Now will test 3 shot groups of 48.6gr. with 20, 30 and 40 thou jumps. As usual safe load in my rifle might blow you and yours to hell so start low and work up.

I BUILT MYSELF A 243 ACKLEY ON A HOWA ACTION TRIED SOME 87 GR VMAX BUT I SETTLED WITH THE 75GR VMAX THIS THING IS SPOOKY ACCURATE !! I WOUID ALSO TRY THE 87GR BERGERS HVLD'S THAT SHOOT WELL IN MY OTHER 243 ACKLEY
 
Ive got 4 group tests loaded of 48.6gr of H4831sc. 6 rounds of .010, .020,.030 and .040" jump each to fire 2 3 shot groups of each. Went to the range and the wind flag was pointing straight West. Reluctantly I turned around and went home. Got to much time, work and money invested thus far with some very promising results to piss it away trying to test in wind like that. Will try again next week. Anyone have any findings on what kind of jump the 105gr VLD seems to like and advice on what distance to test at. Ive read that boat tails dont stabilize till past 100yds and some have said as much as 300yds. That sounds like a tad much to me. So far Ive been working at 200m (216yds). I have been doing this for many years but Im always looking for more input, differnt ideas and findings, something out of the box.

I always test loads starting about 1 hour before sunset, with the winds diminishing, in general, at that time of day. No mirage either. The improvement of clarifying loads started increased dramatically for me.
Jumps for any berger is kind of like black magic. One of my best groupings with 168 grain bergers in 7mm rem mag in an X-Bolt are seated an entire zip code away from the lands and grooves. My 88 bergers in243 win improve with length. My mag will not allow that length, so i carry on, suffering through the 1/2 MOA in a kimber Montana w/Douglas 1-12 groups at. :) .
 
Got to the range today, perfect conditions calm bout -5C. Very dissapointing results. The only 3 shot group that even went under MOA was the last one at .040 jump. Velocity of the 48.6gr of H4831sc during the ladder test was right around 3200fps but today all loads were just over 3100fps. I think thats why the poor grouping to far away from the node. Why the severe velocity drop? Same powder out of the same can. About 10 degree difference in temp. Shouldnt effect the Hodgen powder anyway.

A couple things , Optical chronographs are notorious for giving varying readings due to lighting conditions, distance from muzzle , and how square/level it is. On an intermittent cloud-sunny day with snow on the ground just hooped mine for accurate readings.

Have noticed that around freezing temperatures the Extreme powders don't vary much, say the difference between -10C and 0C, but do vary a bit more as the temperature goes up.

What bullet are you using?

The bullet is a Marrix 105gr. VLD
