.25 wildcats

AlNyhus, what is the case capacity of your 250 Savage AI compared to the 25x47L (6.5x47L) case as fas as water and/or powder? I don't have any 250 Sav AI cases to make that comparision...

Not Al Nyhus, but from my post above:
"My fired 25x47 Lapua cases hold 1.5 Gr. less RL-15 than fired .250AI (Win.)" Respectively, 43.6Gr. vs.45.1Gr., at level full.
The 25x47 is a comparative, "no brainer".

nakneker, Call when you can - I'm here most weekdays days.

Al, please call, or, check you messages. RG

short story... not new an assey invention is the .250 Humdigger ... using a .308 case [family of] with blown out walls with a 45* shoulder.. i used a .260 rem case had forming dies made at Hornady, loaded 100gr noslers, fed 210m, 4831sc will get 3000 fps +/- depending on powder charge even faster with 85gr bullets
you may even find it in the C.O.W. vol. #10 or 11

How much velocity do you sacrifice compared to a 24"-25" barrel, Al? Thanks!

I've never done and back-to-back testing, but comparing my 22" 250 Ackley with Randy Robinett's 257 Roberts Ackley leads me to believe there would be little gains, given the modest case capacity of the 250 Savage Improved. -Al

P.S. R.G.'s 257 Ackley Improved and my gun have some unique history.....twin sisters from different misters, if you will. ;)

R.G. may comment further.......:D

Thank you so much, Al:)

LOL

Nor am I. I wish there were bullet choices in 25 cal like there are in 6 and 6.5mm. I think a 25-250 AI would be a very interesting cartridge.

25 cal just seems to suffer from the same malady as the 270 cal. It is out shined on both sides, the 6.5 and 7 mms.
---The 108 VLD JLK bullets only drop 234" @ 1000 yds from a 200 yd zero shot @ 3225 fps out of a 25/06 (10" twist) 27" barrel and they are very accurate bullets. The bc is probably slightly over .5. I've shot all (10) in the black many times w/ this bullet but never under 10" under competition, however under 7" w/ 5 shots in practice sessions but the old Hart barrel has seen its better days but still good for groundhogs. The 117 Sierra bt spitzer is a very accurate bullet also, but drops 310" @ 1000 yds zeroed in @ 200 yds shot @ about 3050 fps. This is actual shooting.

Many years ago, while writing for Precision Shooting magazine, I took the 6.5x68 Shuler case, blew the taper out, went to a 35-degree shoulder, and necked it to 25 caliber. The 257 Banshee. 100gr Fowlers pushing 4000fps.

Im working with JGS. I want to take the shoulder forward some and change to a 30-40 degree shoulder.
The Weatherby design is a ~50° shoulder as it is. The radius of the body/shoulder and shoulder/neck junction is .1299 and .1512 vs "normal" of ~.029 and .125.

Reducing the neck and should junction radius to .029 and .125 and moving the shoulder forward .13 to make a neck if .260 so can seat near a diameter results in a change of +3.3 case volume.

Keeping the seating depth, bullet and pressure the same yields ~200fps improvement. Not bad at all.

A 257/3200WM while holding more powder seems to only gain ~100fps. Not work it.

I shoot a 25-223 on a savage action with a lilja barrel and a stolle panda in 257 weatherby. I have a Remington 700 in 25-06 begging to be rebarreled and chambered in 25-06 AI.

Also have a Kimber 8400 300wsm I have given some thought into having made into a 25-300wsm hunting rifle.

I really like 25s there's just not alot of support in long range and target bullets.

Sounds like a nice group of rifles you have there;) We don't need a lot of support for the quarter bore, and an array of target bullets isn't necessary as long as the good RG Robinett continues to produce the best on the planet:)

Also never forget the 115 Berger VLD's....... Heck even the Nosler Ballistic tips are hell of a shooter for factory bullets....

My wife bought be the panda 257 weatherby complete for my birthday a couple years ago. Didn't have any info on the components. I assumed it was a 1:10 and bought a bunch of 115 bergers. I fought with it to group better than 3/4". measured the twist with a cleaning rod found it was slower. Turns out it absolutely loved 85gr Nosler ballistic tips at almost 3800fps. Whoever built it must of had long range varmint shooting in mind.
