Red Dot Sights

I'm looking for some input on the various so called "red dot sights" for use on a shotgun. I grew up with a 410 shotgun and was quite proficient with it. Many decades have passed since those days. I've spent most of my adult life shooting rifles with scopes. I approach rifle shooting completely different from my shotgun style. I don't know if it is ageing eyes, lack of practice, or both, that has caused my success behind a scatter gun to dwindle. I've been considering a red dot sight as a possible solution to my shotgun woes. For those that have red dot equipped shotguns, please post your comments on the matter. I'm asking for the pros and cons. If you like them please elaborate on specifics with regard to brand, color and size of dot, etc. My intended use would be mainly calling crows and coyotes. Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge!

I tried an number of various red-dot sights and hologram sights. They work, but I have always found the GRS (ghost ring sight) much more useful. Target acquisition is much faster with the GRS, and unlike battery operated sights, there is nothing to go into failure.

They can be great for hunting, especially on a shotgun. I used one of the very first red dot sights ever made in the late 70s early 80s. The weaver quick point. It was a big ugly thing that got lots of laughs where ever I went. It was fiber optic with a giant orange dot. It was so big, that I used the top of the dot to sight in shotgun slugs so I could sight a little finer. I used it on a remington 870 for everything. Deer with shotgun slugs, squirls, grouse rabbits and crows with a shot barrel. Hunting in southern Ohio everything is usually up close and fast. You can get on game fast. The new offerings are much better and smaller now. For a shotgun you may not want to go with the smallest dot unless it's for shotgun slugs. Aim point has a good reputation and has been making them since the 1970's. Don't waste your money on the cheap ones, you will be disappointed.
