Lathe is here!!!

Matt, I don't know if you know the Pumpkin"Don Nielson". He suggested to me to saw out the length of the lathe and back 30" and put a runway about 5" deep. Always a clown.
Pretty smart, actually. That's the way many shops are set up. You isolate the pad from the foundation, and don't have to worry about expansion and contraction. Once that part is achieved, you dry-pack your baseplates, and nothing moves. Ever! Don is a very smart cookie;)

Well here's an update. I finally got the lathe wired in and I've been running it thru all the gears to break in the gear mesh. I've yet to make a chip though. One thing I've noticed is the hear whine is horrific. What additive can I add to the gearbox to quieten down this noise?

i don't believe the manufacturer recommends any additives. You might call and talk to Matt at Precision Matthews and see what he has to say.

Today I remembered that I had some excess noise when I first got my lathe. Sounded like it was coming from the gearbox, however on closer inspection the noise was coming from the drive belt. I took off the V belt and installed a link belt, the noise and a slight vibration was completely eliminated. I highly recommend the link belt, Harbor Freight has the best price on them.

I'll give a call tomorrow. I've got to do something though it's too noisy to run as is.

Do you have a part number for the belt?

Does anyone else here have this lathe? I am interested in adding a third machine and this lathe is or was on my top 3 list. The noise issue has me a little turned off I must say. Ill be watching closely to see what the Op comes up with. Lee

this is the Taiwanese made machine correct???

Lee,

James has the model 1236 which is a Chinese made machine. Overall they are a good quality machine and have a 3 year manufacturers warranty. I have the model 1340 GT which is a model up and is manufactured in Taiwan. If you are looking for another lathe and your budget allows it you won't be disappointed with the Precision Matthews 1340 GT. If you want to make a road trip to Indiana you are welcome to come and test my lathe out.

Pm sent. I like Indiana!! LOL!!! In all honesty I would like to add a third machine in my shop. Lathes are just like guns. I can always find a reason to buy another!!! I was looking at the turn pro from Enco, but it looks like they are all discontinued. Not real sure why they would do that, but they have. The open gear box on the Taiwanese made PM has me a little concerned but perhaps its not a big deal?? Lee
