I may shoot H4198 this w/e

seems most people have switched from 133 to LT32 in the 6PPC and a good ole boy is gonna bring me a lb to the match to try before next month but for this w/e it is either 29.0 133 or 27.2 H4198,,I know the crowd may think I am crazy but so far the 4198 load has not thrown a flier or done anything but punch out little groups,,it recoils less and is 80 fps faster,,it may not meter as well but I run all my charges across scales in everything I load,,

shot in very humid conditions this AM with a light breeze,,but over the last couple weeks these two 5 shot groups are about how these loads have been holding in just about all conditions,,

First, and foremost, go to the match with what load you have garnered the most confidence in. Take notes on conditions (wind, temp., humidity) in your practice sessions and match time. Study your match targets, look for a pattern(s), look at shape of holes in target. IME, 133 and low humidity = NFG.
Again, I strongly advise you to practice on score targets.

I did shoot 20 shots at one of the 6br.com free targets with the little dots about the time it started raining and left it on the backer,,10 shots with 133 and 10 with 4198,,there was very little difference in the loads but I believe the 4198 may have had 1-2 more complete punch outs of the dot where you couldnt see anything but bullet hole,,combine that with ever time I shoot them side by side the 4198 is .020- .030 smaller 5 shot groups at 100 combined with ever body sayin 133 is hard to keep tuned combined with the extra 80 fps to fight the wind at the 200 stage at the Steamplant cant be a bad thing,,

it is no doubt the JDS 68 BT bullet is about 60% better than the 68 Berger FB,,

I even shot a couple groups at 300 to see if I could induce any fliers and the verticle on the 4198 load at 300 is better than my 6BR and BRDX 105 gr loads,,just gotta get a couple more flags to be able to get them to wad up,,

I think you're going to like that LT32. You have a very well smithed rifle, and it will probably make even a bad load look good on paper. But you're doing all the right things with it, and if you're confident in the 4198 take it to the match. I agree with LHsmith's post above. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. :) WD

Excellent shooting mr.big, I know you are so ready for this weekend. Looks like the H4198 load is hammerin. Be sure to let us know how the match goes, very interested in your first trip with my first PPC barrel. Good luck.

I think I asked you this question a while ago, but I have to ask again seeing your targets. How's it feel being in Heaven? Nice shooting!!

Humm. . .never tried 4198 in a ppc. Will give it a "shot" in my new Krieger. LT 32 has not performed as well as N133 to date. The 4198 burn rate is close to 133.

The JDS bullet is new to me. I don't see them in use anywhere on the IBS equipment lists. Are you jumping or jamming them?

both these 5 shot groups were shot with the 68 JDS .008 off the lands,,all my seat depth numbers are + or - where the bullet just makes contact with the lands,,I use a rough in type seat depth test procedure and start +.030 and work out .005 at a time shooting 5 shot groups about 2 grs below max powder charge out to -.030 and whichever depth looks best I load .003 both sides of that depth and then load every .001 between the best of those groups,,,then I start up in .5 gr powder charge increments until I think I am high as I need to go and with 3 shot groups and will load 5 rounds of the best looking group and .3 grs each side of it and narrow down my powder charge trying to hit the middle of the fastest node I can,,

I like to use powders that will go over pressure with just enough room in the case to seat the bullet,,with 133 I have to compress load to start getting pressure and not sure I could get enough in to go over pressure,,the next faster powders I had on hand were 4198 and RL7 so I thought the 4198 might make pressure and still have enough room to seat the bullet without compressing powder and maybe get more speed with good accuracy,,so far it looks good to me and I havent tried the RL7 or anything else for that matter,,I have only shot 133 and 4198,,

That 4198 will blow up so big in a ppc youll think something is broke. When youre on top of it all day sometimes you can see it coming but preloading with it is a very risky trick. Let us know how it does tho when its on its on. Nobody i know is brave enough to use it at a match cause itll shoot a 3/4" group right after a screamer!

IDK if it is against the rules but I am gonna ask Rick if I can shoot the same rifle in Modified and Unlimited at 100 yards,,shoot the 133 in Modified and 4198 in Unlimited,,

or at least if he has an empty bench on the 2nd relay maybe let me shoot ,,I would like to test the 4198 in Match conditions,,it is shooting in the mid .1`s just about every time but I havent shot it in long strings with the bbl hot,,

excited to shoot the PPC in its first UBR Match,,I really have faith the rifle can shoot 66 targets ,,it will all be on me and wind reading,,

I sucked at 100 with a 254 but did ok at 200 with 241,,,,shot a 495 for 4th place behind a 3 way tie for first at 498..

wind was tough and I stayed with the 133 load all day and doubt it would have mattered if the load would have been .000 group capable,,

That is a respectable score for a newby. Try that LT-32....practice in the wind under the clock so you are forced to gain confidence in the gun and your wind reading abilities. You know it will shoot, so hone YOUR bench manners until all your motions are smooth and fluid until it becomes second nature and you can concentrate on the flags and target and not where fired cases are going, or watching your hand pick up rounds or checking if your neighbors done, etc. Test a chosen load in left and right conditions as that particular combination might favor a certain crosswind.

We also stayed with 133 all day, lots are telling us to go to 32 powder. Do you think your 133 stayed in tune all day and how can ya tell in winds like we had today?

I didnt see any shots hit off in left field anywhere or have any wild fliers,,with my limited wind skilz I wouldnt have been able to tell if a shot or two would have been on the load or not,,

I searched the weather for Gallatin, from the data I could find winds from due west 10 mph avg, gusts to 24, temps 69-80', RH 60 - 40 %. Is this somewhat accurate?
133 should not have needed much tweaking based on my experience in those conditions factoring in temp and RH. I would have been watching flags upwind to see whats coming. If you were unlucky enough to be first bench upwind, I would have put a flag(s) off to the upwind side if there was room, and it was evident the west wind was the prevailing condition before the match.

thats probably close on weather but it felt warmer and the wind seemed worse,,seems there was a couple stoppages to rehang some targets blown off and I shot a couple sighters in some gusts that were 2 lines right and 2 down and also 2 lines left and 2 lines high,,I was trying to shoot the west to east wind which is 10 oclock to 4 oclock or so and holding high left would keep me in the 10 most of the time and shot seven 11s and 6 nines for a 241,,

I was hoping to shoot a 260 at 100 and a 240 at 200 for a 500 but it took me 2 targets at 100 to get my head in the game and it was too late by then,,had fourteen 11s and ten 10s at 100,,

next time I am gonna shoot the crap out of that 3 minute warmup period before the first 10 minute match,,

it will drive me nutz till I shoot a 500 and then maybe next years goal to clean the 100 yard stage,,

really fun day,,lots of good shooters and better people,,

Not real familiar with the UBR format, but in any W/U period I try 2 or 3 different conditions, favor one, then I'm prepared if my fav condition doesn't cycle back in time. Good to hear you had fun, better to hear you want to win.
