Need help with SEB Gen1 rest

I purchased a Gen1 SEB about a year ago...the problem I'm having is when I tighten the tension screws to hold the weight of the rifle the joy stick gets jerky...there seems to be no "in between adjustment" for lack of a better term.

I know there is a lot tinkers out there...anyone have a fix? Or is this something I just have to live with? For the record I am on the list for a SEB max.

The old SEB rest's tension is a bit tricky and need very fine adjustment. Travelor is right, the easiest way to smoothen and to balance the action is to add a counter weight. (Assuming you use the rest in "normal" motion / up for up). Just email me {sebastianlambang(at)yahoo(dot)com} and provide me with your shipping address, I will send you a counterweight for free.
Also let me know the weight of your rifle.
ATB,
seb.

A response like this from the owner is one of the reasons I own a Seb Neo, and recommend them to anyone that asks.

Seb,

Wouldn't the counterweight also work in reverse motion (up for down)?

Unfortunately No. If you use the NEO/MAX/SEB in reverse motion (up for down) you will need to put weight on the joystick side / shooter's side.

To revise:
You don't need a counterweight for the MAX and NEO regular rest, for rifle up to 25 lbs.

Sebastian that's a very generous offer thank you! Just so you know I bought this rest used. I would be more than willing to pay for the counter weight if this is a issue. Again thank you very much.

No worries. As long as the rest has not been modified or changed, it does not matter to me either you bought it new or used, just last week or several years ago, I just want & have to stand behind my products!
I have checked my inventory, I don't have one but will make the weight and ship to you asap in this week.
Will add a "ring" so you can use the counterweight for various rifles 10lbs up to 22 lbs.
Thanks for your email and address info, parcel should be arrived next week.

Re; Tension adjustment on the old SEB rest & the use of counterweight.
What you need is how to set/adjust the tension screws so that the top does not rock back & forth (when you shake the top) and it gives you a smooth(est) joystick action. It usually means that each tension screw only gives just a very little pressure on/to the internals, or even just "touching". Each screw is supposed to give equal tension, too.
Think about one or two second movement in an analog clock for FINE adjustment.

*First loosen all (four) counter-nuts & tension screws, then using your fingers rotate each screw (one by one) clockwise, this to feel that the end tip of the screw "touches" the teflon sheet inside.... then tighten the counternut.
Check the top movement and joystick action for each screw adjustment you made. Also be sure the screw does not rotate or get deeper when you tighten the counternut.

I tried a counterweight on my orig seb and couldnt use it with the stop in place

Back when Paul Schmid (RIP) & I designed our "BWS" (Balance Weight System aka counterweight) for a heavy gun called the "Fist of God", we only had the old SEB rest with same stopper.... Unsure with yours / the problem....? Too large c/weight diameter thus interfere with the stop?

seb.

I think my stop has been modified and didnt have the correct counterweight just home made. I also have a problem with the rod that actually goes thru the rest the joystick hooks to- not sure whats originally supposed to keep it in there but it now has some type of o ring on each side

Our first c/weight experiment, last 2004/2005?

C/weight for the old SEB rest, with various "rings" for various gun weights.

Can't find a better photo re; the use of c/weight on an old SEB rest. Only for reference/description. I hope the owner (Martin) does not mind I post his photo here.
