your solvent of CHOICE?

No matter what solution you are using , or what technique you are using, you need a bore-scope to show what works and what does not. I always thought i had the cleaning ritual down pat till i got a bore-scope, then i found out how much i did not know about what i thought i knew. If you can not see it how can you clean it.

First off let me say that I am LAZY! I want the chemicals to do the work for me. I've tried many including foam, pastes etc. For general cleaning Hoppe's #9 is fine. For copper fouling I like KG-12 big bore cleaner. Second choice would be Montana Extreme. I brush and patch with Hoppe's, then patch with KG-12 and go watch tv while it soaks for a few hours. I repeat till clean.

I've tried most of the solvents out there and have found Montana Extreme bore solvent to be the best for my uses. I also have some Sweets in my cleaning cabinet and a little JB and Iosso for any carbon issues that may arise.

When the barrel is still warm I run 4-5 wet patches with Carb-out, or Butches, really doesn’t matter — just to get the loose black carbon out. Then I foam the bore with WipeOut, wait 20 minutes, then reapply the foam. I plug chamber and muzzle, then run patches 4-5 hours later.

With this method, on most of my custom barrels, I rarely brush. My throat seems to move less than most guys. No carbon ring.

IMHO, the prices on some bore cleaners are borderline ridiculous. I simply mix up Ed's red and substitute naptha for the Kerosene plus I add a bit of 5 weight high detergent motor oil. Unless you're dealing with a barrel that coppers up pretty badly, it works quite well for a fraction of the cost of the higher end commercial solvents. Just be careful if you're using it around a nicely finished wood stock (Acetone).

What are you plugging with?

Forum Boss: I leave the O-ring bore guide in the action and stuff some patches in the end. On the muzzle I will stick in a tapered foamy and then tape over. That's just to prevent the Wipe-Out from dripping out while I drive home.

I've turned out some other guys to this cleaning method and many of them have cut their brushing by 80%. I think part of the success is getting at the fouling immediately -- as soon as the match is over. Then the WipeOut works really well.

Eds Red always cleaned out more crud after using a commercial solvent for me to remove residue and carbon, using a brass brush. Copper will require a different compound, like Wipeout.

Not to hijack, but I don’t know to much about the Iosso bore paste. But a lot of people seem to love that stuff. What is the proper way to use it, and will it eat up your barrel like jb?

+1 for Bore Tech eliminator, works as well as anything I've tried without the harsh smell!

You can go around to all the solvents but if you use a lot and watch how it all works in and out of the gun youll always choose butchs or shooters choice

I'm liking wipeout with accelerator.
I was given a sample of "Seal 1" to try last week.
Biodegradable smells good too, they also make a bore paste.

Great thread. Several great products listed and I confess to having them all. Foams are great, Butch's and Shooters Choice really cut the crud. Bore guides are essential as are the rags to protect the stock & trigger. Don't forget the quality rod and accessories. When you are all done how do you protect the bore?

Consider Hornady's One Shot with Dynaglide. There are as many lubes as there are solvents but how do they all compare? Check out the corrosion resistance testing done with 46 different products by someone who has way more time than I do. http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667
Hornady has a link to this from their One Shot product web page.

I have been a fan of Boeshield T9 rust preventative for all my marine needs and it didn't fare too well in this comparison. My son turned me on to One Shot as a quick clean/lube with a bore snake till we could get the rifles properly cleaned. I didn't realize how well it protected till reading the test results. The other winner, Frog Lube is great for a lube but isn't a cleaner. Granted One Shot won't clean as well as Butch's, ShootersChoice, or even Wipeout, but it's really effective at cleaning out loose fouling, protecting the bore, and wipes dry.

I use a guide. But on a savage the end of the guide is right on the safety, so it can drip if your not careful. I just put a rag under it now.
That's not the proper guide. The proper guide should be longer out of the action. I use a Lucas bore guide no problems with my Savage.

I had a friend with a 6PPC BR rifle that recently had accuracy problems with his rifle recently. I bore scoped the bore and found excessive powder and copper fouling much to his surprise. He was using Wipeout with accelerator. Not any more! You need a bore scope to verify any cleaning product!
