Your best 6.5x47 600 yard groups.

Has anyone got the 6.5x47 Lapua to shoot consistent small groups? Mike shoots four 5 shot groups in the 4s at 600.

If you have, how?

Thanks!

Terry

Wow,

Terry on a good day I can keep 50 shots in the 10 ring and about 10 edgeing into the 9 ring (just outside the 10 ring), 18 to 22 (avg) in the X ring. I am shooting 123 Lapua Scenars in a 8 twist 28" heavy barrel.

I am sure if I practiced more and paid more attention to my loads eg: weighing brass and bullets, I could probably do better.

Should be an interesting thread.

Teey,
What's the issue? 38.5 grains of Varget, 123 grain Lapua. The tech info is on the forum. First match two years ago at 600 yards with scope and sling, 16 x's but dropped one point for a 199-16. It ain't the arrow its the Indian. (Pete Hodges)

Who is Mike? Are is it a typo? But if you are Mike has a rifle that shoots in the 4's that is .4'' at 600 yards consistently needs to put it up and shoot it only in a match. Hope it is you and that some very good shooting no mater what caliber it is.

I love an optimist!

Those 4s are 4 inches. I wouldn't be looking for help if I could shoot .4".

I think we all knew that Terry, just like to yank a chain once in a while ;). I'm no help close as I can come is a 260 but there should be plenty out there who have a 1/2" MOA (3") 600 load.

The one I shot last year would normally shoot in the 2.25-3'' range at 600 yards with a few sub 2'' groups.

It would put 4 in a nice group, but would almost always throw one out opening the group up. I am back on the 6br improved bandwagon now again.

The 6.5x47 was a Bat B Action, 30'' Bartlein 5r 8.5 twist with Berger 130 vlds at 2980 fps using Varget powder.

It was in a TMBR stock with is more of a short range stock, I think it would have shoot better in the current Tracker stock I have know.

If you are only in the 4'' range andhave a good load I would look at your rest/bag set up and your shooting style.

Good Luck,
Dallas

Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm going to try the 123gr bullets and load again. In addition I'm going to ask at least one good shooter to shoot the gun at 600. Perhaps they will see something I have missed.

I really appreciate the help.

A guy I shoot with at the range ( Gary ) has a 6.5x47 and shoots the 140 gr. Berger VLD's out of a 26 inch Krieger barrel with a 1 in 8 twist. I know he is using Varget at about 2700-2800 fps and he gets mad if he shoots groups bigger than an 1 1/4 in at 500 yds. I have witnessed him shoot some 5/8 inch groups with a Sinclair front bipod and rear bag. That gun is scary Accurate. I told him he should enter some benchrest matches before he burns out the barrel.
I saw how accurate that Krieger barrel was, I bought one to build a 6.5-300 WSM.
I found out his load is 34.6 gr. Varget with 140 gr. VLD Target seated to the lands.

At that distance if you are not using wind flags and getting a good steady condition your groups can vary greatly from 3/4" to 6 inches with wind speed or direction shift. Thats why the competition shooters fire all their rounds in 15 seconds as they try to get the same wind condition.

Get a hold of those good ol boys down at Harry jones range in WV. they shoot 6.5x47's and hold a bunch of records. I think the range record is 2.1 with a 47 and i hear he shot a .600 in practice these are 5 shot groups @1K, check out the IBS web site.......jim
