Tell me about your 7-08.

Shot this buck with my Savage Axis 7-08 and a 162 SST on opening morning here in MO. Shot him through the lungs at 550 yards, he walked 10 yards and laid down, done! I really like this cartridge, and the barrel should last a long time too. I'm using norma brass and RE17, 44.4 GR which got me 2745 fps at 75 degrees. So about 2700 mv when I shot this deer, or maybe a bit less even, it was below 32 degrees. Great hunting cartridge, and you can shoot in the off season and not worry about your barrel lasting!

I've got two 7mm-08's.

Browning X-Bolt and a Tikka T3 Varmint in a Roedale RCS11 chassis.

Both will shoot .5" or under with developed loads however the Browning will walk the shots a little if the barrel gets too much heat in it.

I use either Lapua 260Rem expanded up or Lap 308/308 Palma necked down and neck turned.

Both rifles have no problem driving 162-168gr projectiles at 2750 -2800fps using Alliant RL17 or 2000-MR.

The Tikka has been used out to 1400yards and its performs well.

I have used the Tikka in a few tactical/precision type matches over here and ended up winning a long range comp series for the year. 5 shoots over the year from 300-1000yards including snap exposures, rapids and deliberate.

Normally use Berger 168gr Classics however they are unavailable in Aus at present along with 162gr Amax, 168gr Berger VLD's. If no stock comes in by January I'll have to grab 168gr SMK's and work up another load.

I've thought about re-barrelling the Tikka when the times comes and chambering in 7mm-08AI and 26" barrel. I'd be surprised if I can't reach 2900fps with the 168gr's.

I have a 7mm-08 built for F-class, Brux barrel, Savage target action, longer throat for 180gr berger Hybrids. Shoots .250" groups at 100yds. The rifle will keep them in the 10 ring at 1,000 yards if
my wind reading is good. I am using 42.7 gr. of IMR 4007SSC powder and getting 2620 fps with
a 28" barrrel 1:9 twist. I realy like IMR 4007, not sure it will be available in the future. IMR discontinued it last winter and took it off there web site, but now, it is again listed in there powder line up, so maybe they will bring it back. Maybe if enough people e-mail IMR to bring it back they might listen. My next build will have a 30" barrel and hopefully get another 50 fps.

Terry , I have no trouble with this 49.0 load of RL17 . after adjusting case capacity on quickload I'm a grain or two over quickload max . I've shot this load in the summer heat with no problems and I get good brass life using norma brass , so I'd say I'm safe with it . but as always start low and work up .

here are close ups of the big cardboard target that I posted in my first reply . these are the three groups across the top .

48.0 grain at 200 yards (left )

48.5grain at 200 yards (middle ) I always had one out with this load . don't know if it's me or the load .

49 grains at 200yards ( right )
