Wuchak Hunting

The original Algonquin Indian name that Woodchuck was derived from. The Corn is at 10 ft., Beans at 3 and the Alfalfa, in my "Long Range" shooting lanes, is at 2 ft.! This forced me to revert to stalking(Indian Style) new areas were 300 yards is an exception with most are sub-200 yds. Friday night found me carrying my Savage 16 sporting a PacNor 9tw 26" Varmint contour chambered in .17 Fireball. Went 6 for 6 and taking me to 103 for the Season. Only one noteworthy shot was a 155 yd. Free-Standing from my Tripod/Walking Sticks with only it's head exposed!
Saturday had me switching things up and carrying my 20" 10tw .17 Ackley Hornet chambered TC Contender for a great weight savings. I walked up on several Friday and was that close my scope would not focus so I strapped my S&W 617 10 shot .22 LR sporting a Burris 3X EER scope on my hip. Went 9 for 9 with the longest at 165 yds.! Those little 20 gr. V-Max at 3575 fps MV were the "Hammer of Thor"! Several went to ground beside me but would not return as if they knew I had the 617 trained on their burrow! Had a bunch of fun and will be back. Please address me as Chief Wuchak from here forward! ::)

Chief Wuchak. Well that certainly clears up things. Just the other day I was wondering how they ever came up with woodchuck as a name since I never saw one chucking wood. ;)
Groundhog isn't much better since they are not even a distant cousin of a pig - and they are certainly a lot cleaner.
234 so far for the season. I got lucky - my organic farmer has a big (500 x 700 yards) wheat field that he just harvested and mowed. Since he can't fertilize, he plants clover as a cover crop to put nutrients back into the soil. A creek runs down one side and it is loaded with holes up the wazoo. 26 out of that one field in the past two weeks.

Sounds like "Hog Heaven" Bill! Had a funny one last week at one of my mid range fields. Had one ranged at 607, dialed come-up and windage and sent one. Could have swore I heard the hit however one stands up a couple of yards to the left and ranges 609. Dang, must have missed, so I send another and swore I heard a hit again. Walked out at quitting time and you guessed it! Two Chucks laying! Tall grass and recoil makes it tough to see what's going on! ;D

A similar thing happened to me a few days ago, MrM. But my range was only 510 yards. Shot one standing up and it sure looked and sounded like I hit it. A minute later and a couple yards to the left it re-appears. No, this one is bigger. It comes over to my kill and it appears to pick up and shake my kill. So I shoot it. After shooting a couple others, I drove over to check things out. (this is the clover planted wheat field and the farmer told me it was ok to drive over any part of the field I wanted)(Man, is that ever nice). Anyway, what I found was the mother laying on top of her pup. Apparently she was trying to revive it.
I had the same thing happen last year and at first I thought I was watching a cannibal groundhog.
