Wrong Powder! Happy Ending!!

I have a "Wrong Powder" story with a different twist to it.. On my first 6 Dasher I was having a bit of a problem getting a load I wanted. It would shoot "decent" but not to the point I was demanding of the cartridge. So, I went to a "custom" bullet manufacturer, JLK Bullets. I started with RL-15 and the groups started to show real promise at 32.7grs. So I started with seating depth, and then I went after neck tension. After settling on 32.7grs and 12-13K INTO the lands with CCI-450 primers, I was ready to test them out at 600 yards, prior to taking it to a competition. So here I go loading up VARGET (the powder I used 90pct of load development before the JLK's) to the exact same specs as the RL-15 load. Out of sheer force of habit, I picked up the Varget. Well I knew that the loads would be SAFE as far as pressure goes and since I had loaded up all but 5 rounds before I recognized my error, I kept going.

To make this story come to the point, I took it out to 600 yards and tried it out. Much to my elated surprise, it shot under 2" at 600 yards! As a matter of fact, Stacy, a "Sling / Palma Shooter" was pulling for me and I blew out the 1" spotter 4 out of 6 shots! We started using "white pasties" to mark the shots! Needless to say, this is now my load. The next match was a 300 yard match with very mild winds, about 4MPH and steady. I was on the first relay and the first match I shot a 150-15X! This is NOT to brag. It is just the "lighter-side" of getting the wrong powder and having it turn out to be GREAT, rather than a disaster!

If you notice , this post was written on Jan 10, 2015! I have L-O-N-G since used that barrel up! LOL! How this posting got resurrected after such a long time is a wonderment to me! LOL!!!

ShootDots,
No!... I didn’t notice!... lol I see that a lot though. I think what happens is people use the search function for something there interested in then they get engrossed in the five year old thread and comment!.. I’ve caught myself almost doing it before.

There is nothing wrong with resurrecting an old thread if it is important to the person who is bringing it up.. I have done it before....

I loaded 4350 instead of Varget in my 223 and shot a match at Palo Alto one time. Won the match...gun hammered....just took 1.5 more minutes of elevation!! Took me forever to figure out what happened. Just glad it wasn’t the other way around. Good topic and reminder no matter how old, very easy to do.

I see shooters (beating a dead horse) tweaking and adjusting over and over instead of just trying a different powder. I learned years ago to just go through the appropriate powders in order to find the one that is great. Sometimes it's the sixth powder, sometimes it's the 1st or 2nd ! The ones i expected to be best are not the best, sometimes they are !

Does anyone use Hodgon BENCHMARK powder. I shoot a .223 , 9 twist 26 inch barrel. 25 gr Benchmark behind a 50 gr hornady V max. Seems like it works outstanding in my Savage out to about 400 yds. Any thoughts on the Benchmark powder? Phantom Phixer

Benchmark is hard to beat in the 223rem with lighter bullets.

One downside I've seen with BM, is uniform velocities are harder to achieve compared to other powders.

I chrono'd a 10 shot string shot at 330 yards. The 10-shot group was less than 1 inch, but the ES was in the 70's !

My universal experience with every rifle has been that it will shoot its favorite powder well right out of the gate without extensive tweaking. After the umpteenth time of not getting better results from tweaking a mediocre load only to change power and have it work better immediately, I've adopted the philosophy of trying a different powder first when I'm not satisfied with the results, instead of playing with charge weight and seating depth and then giving up and starting over with a new powder.

That went better than my mistake today. Loaded 50 rds of 22 Hornet with 12.5 grains of H380. Why? I dunno? I am old and confused it seems. Sposed to use Lil Gun which I had out yesterday then put away. H380 was on the bench sooo.. Anyone notice how H380 and Lil gun look the same? Yes I broke down all the rounds. I'll start over tomorrow after I sleep some more..
