Since I found benchrest, F-class, XTC and service rifle shooting boring, hated being in the pit half the time and while there getting stuck next to two 13 year old girls discussing important girl stuff(last straw, lol), I gravitated to SH and other shooting sports. Not because I felt snipery, lol, but because I liked a more dynamic shooting style and I preferred shooting steel more than paper, plus I liked/like the challenge of attempting a first round hit on steel at any reasonable distance in field conditions without the use of flags.
Story coming and backing up a little, about 11-12 years ago after joining the Hide for a year or so I went to the SRM steel match near Raton NM, my very first long range field course match.
Our squad makes it out to the first stage, my turn comes, and someone behind me is making fun of my scope, seriously, I'm not kidding, lol. I complete the stage, 6 for 6, turn around and see this small guy is the one talking sh!t about my stuff. Long story short, the day ends, I beat the small guy by 4 points, and asked him what he thought of my crappy Horus scope now??!!(8-26x50 Predator/IPHY) and that how was it I had outscored him using holdovers and holdoffs with it without dialing a turret, while he was using a S&B 5-25x56 PM2 and dialing. I did this in front of the rest of the squad which gave them a good laugh as they had heard his rhetoric during the day. It was a year or so later when I saw the owner of SH on a video and realized who he was, lol. He didn't ban me so I have to give him a nod.
Years after that I won a long range field course series two years in row. Yes, partly because of the knowledge I gained from SH, and even Frank, for that I am very grateful!!!
That being said I am able to separate the various abrasive type personalities over at the Hide from the knowledge they provide which can be very good stuff. Actually the most offending guy I've ever seen over there (alias NOBODY) was way way above most of us in knowledge as far as guns, hunting, fishing and practically anything firearms related.
For me it's been very entertaining over there watching all the drama unfold over the years, it's a lesson in human behavior if nothing else, and has taught me that I shouldn't act in certain ways and shut up when I need to. We are all on a journey here and I hope I'm a better person at the end of it by overcoming all my sins.
I'm here on AS to learn too. Who doesn't like accurate rifles, accurate reloads, etc, but especially all those little tips which go to the quiver of knowledge that may come in handy when 1 point makes the difference between winning or not!
As far as shooting goes, someday I might need to back off from the more physical to the more sedate styles of shooting. Getting old doesn't mean I have to quit shooting -YAY.
BTW, by far the person that most angered me and the worst I've ever been treated in the shooting sports was at the sign up trailer before an F-class match at Ben Avery. This individual is one of the best shooters that ever lived! Apparently he didn't concentrate on the more important traits one should try to achieve in life.
