Working on wind reads

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
Tried to focus on 3 - 6- 9 and 12 oclock winds. 50 yd. 73 degr. 3- 15 mph, switching swirling winds.

For my nomenclature, a 50% wind is a 45 deg wind flag, 100% wind is a 90 deg wind flag. Heres my target:

Pt of aim is lil blue x... I think I got tail winds dialed in... :) head winds a lil less so and got alot of practice with 3 oclock... which really does drive the boolit up and left... surprised how much up....

Garandman, Fun isn't it, trying to see where the hold needs to be. I shot a match yesterday and my hold was about 11 o'clock at the 7 ring this is for the RBA target, similar to iR50

Do you choose 2-3 different wind reads to use for the whole match? Or just read whatever wind read ya got when you break the shot ?

garandman, I let the sighter tell me where the consistent hold will be. I aim dead center and note where my flags were and where the shot went and adjust to place the shot center or as close to it when shooting the score bull.
I don't use any wind rose and rely completely on sighter shots and flag positions.
normally I shoot the most predominant condition at the time, even under the clock trying to shoot multiple conditions, for me at least has poor results. however if it is a switching and some what breezy condition then I shoot a lot of sighters and go with the best hold at the time which can be a few different holds.
I been known to shoot sighters for the first 5-minutes or more doing a match before going to the scoring bulls. when some guys have shot the first, sometimes second row I am only then starting to shoot for score.

Come to Oklahoma tomorrow and you can work on 25 mph winds with gusts to 40 mph.
I did that a few weeks ago, with winds that varied direction through the range. East wind at the table west wind at the target, god knows what the devil was up to inbetween. It was not very cash money and a learning experience lol.

If you are shooting under perfect conditions you will still have shots go right/left and up/down. Conditions will also make shots go right/left and up/down. Shooter judgement error will make shots go right/left and up/down. Sometimes all these errors cancel each other and you get that dreaded shot that goes right where you aimed. Sometimes these errors are cumulative and you get what is called a flier.

As a shooter you have to judge the results of every shot in the context of the magnitudes of each of the sources of error individually and in totality.

A very instructive way to deal with error is to shoot a target for score shooting 2 or 3 shots on each bull. Then score the target using your worst shot on each bull vs your best shot on each bull. The more you can narrow the gap in the two scores the better shooter you will be.

Back at the range today. 2125 on the ARA card. Pretty consistent tailwind 3 - 5 mph. So it became a good exercise in estimating how much the tailwind would raise the impact. 3 shots pretty much ruined my score. :)

Shooter error I'd guess. Hard to imagine this Vudoo S22 being the cause of my problem.

A friend of mine has a Vudoo and is having a hard time getting it to group at 100 yds. He is shooting Lapua Center X and Eley Tenex.

My V-22 had no luck with anything Eley. Got some Center - X to test.

Midas + shoots well as well as SK Rifle Match.
