Wipeout

Recently tried "Wipeout" bore cleaner. Folks this is great stuff. After soaking in the bore for 20 to 30 minutes the bore just cleans up with patches. Easiest way to get the copper out without lots of brushing with copper remover. I think I was wearing out my bore before with all the brushing!

Yep, told ya' so:

http://www.6mmbr.com/borecleaning.html

I have a PacNor 3-groove. I do take some MT Extreme to the range if I'm switching between powders. But normally I just come home from the range, apply Wipe-Out, wait 3 hours and patch out. Sometimes I'll add another squirt after 20 minutes or so.

With Wipe-Out accelerator it works even fast.

I'd got some last year when some folks came on over for our fall Prone match... it did get the copper out, but in general it seemed like it didn't do a whole lot for the powder fouling, still needed to brush it out first), but once that was gone, a good fill of the bore w/ foam and leave it overnight seemed to do the trick on copper. Of course, I could have had the barrel cleaned long, long before that using conventional methods... Maybe now w/ some better, less prone to fouling) barrels it might work that much better...

Monte, your instincts are correct I think. I usually send three wet patches through the bore to get the loose carbon and soot out of the tube. I think Wipe-Out has to be more effective if it doesn't have to fight through that stuff to reach the steel. This is also why I usually add a second squirt, after the Wipe-Out has been in the barrel a half-hour or so.

I used to have a Savage with a heavy-fouling factory barrel with lots of chatter marks. I can tell you from experience that an overnight application of Wipe-Out,after three wet patches) cleaned BETTER than multiple applications of Sweets 7.62, hours of brushing, and 30-40 patches.

Yo,

Oh, I believe you! I had one of those nasty chatter-marked factory Savage barrels too. Even after doing the FF bit on it, I generally left it soaking overnite w/ WipeOut, then patched it out the next day and 'checked' w/ Sweets... almost always clean, if not, the Sweets got the little bit that was left. Lazy man's cleaning, but then I leave the cases in the tumbler over the weekend to make double dang sure they're clean when I pull them out. Out in the shop... can't hear it, doesn't bother anyone, and electricity is pitiful cheap here.

I've thought about trying the stuff again now w/ a new SSS/Douglass 6mm BR barrel, or on my Broughton 5C 1-13" twist .308 Palma barrel... haven't fussed much w/ cleaning the Douglass, but the Broughton cleans up so easy anyway... it almost wouldn't be worth it ;)

Monte

Monte,
Though that Broughton may be easy to clean, I think Wipe-Out is still worth it--because it saves time and clean-up mess. After shooting, I do the 2-3 wet patches through the bore--either MT Extreme or Butches--whatever my hand grabs out of the kit first. I let that soak while I'm tearing down the chron or putting away other gear. Then I run one dry patch through.

I get home, set the gun on my coffee table, stick in the bore guide, squirt in Wipe-Out until I see a little tail of foam out the end of the bore guide. Then between 30-60 minutes later, I'll refill the bore. A few hours later I'll patch out the Wipe-out, wipe off the muzzle, then put the gun in the safe. I used to run some Eezox through the bore before storage, but now I don't even do that if I'll be shooting the gun again on the weekend--this seems to yield a better zero.

The procedure is so easy it's almost laughable compared to all the scrubbing I used to do. Does it work? The Savage 6BR shoots as accurately as anything at my club, including some $3000 customs. At my most recent match, I unpacked, ran one dry patch through the bore, took one shot, dialed in the windage, and was zeroed at 600 on my second shot.

My moto is mo' shootin', less cleanin'

I acknowledge that this "lazy man's" method may not be ideal for bigger cartridges that burn more powder and leave stubborn carbon. But burning less powder is one thing that makes the 6BR so desireable anyway.

BTW guys -- tip from the owner of wipe-out

find some 3/8" OD vinyl tubing at your hardware store.

this will have a 1/4" ID

it fits snugly and with about a 6"-12" piece attached you can push it into your chamber shoulder and give it a shot till it comes out the muzzle. let it finish expanding then pull her out

works like a charm and zero mess!

Does it work better than putting in the bore guide and shooting foam in from the other end? I mean, I have to patch the stuff out anyways... might as well just put the bore guide in to begin with, right?

Monte

I always use the bore guide, then shoot a little in the muzzle as well. If you don't hold your finger over the muzzle for a few seconds, it will pop back out at you. Not a good idea to spill any on wood stocks. :)

Monte -- yes, works better. i have tried EVERY way, and will stick with the 3/8" vinyl tube ;)

the only waste here is the spagetti that comes out the muzzle ;)

O, and BTW -- you can nest some 1/4" OD tubing into the 3/8 as well to reach the neck in a 223 chamber ;)

I just saw an add the other day for Hoppes Elite version of a foam barrel cleaner. Any one tried it?

The chemical composition of Wipe-Out is better than the copycats which are formulated in Finland. Hoppes and others contain a higher % of solids and there have been issues with rust formation. Stick with Wipe-Out.

Wipe-Out was finaly imported here to Australia last year and i bought 2 cans straight up gave all my rifles a dose and got them nice and clean and it is so easy. When i go hunting or to the range when i have finished shooting i give my rifle a shot of G96 then when i am home ready to clean Wipe out the G96 and give it some Wipe-Out let it sit Wipe it out and put it away.
Toooooo Easy why would you worry about even trying anything else works perfect for me.

Well... one last area that I've been understandably somewhat reluctant to try WipeOut or anything similar on... AR-15's. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I've been under the impression that WipeOut will attack aluminum to some degree. Yes/no/maybe? As aluminum is such a major structural element of AR's, including the gas block, gas tube, etc. I've pretty much kept it the heck way from my Service Rifle and other AR's... and since I have to keep everything on hand to clean *those* out, I've kind of hung onto traditional cleaning methods for my other guns.

Anybody here know if there is any truth to the WipeOut/aluminum tales?

EDITED:

Well, kind of answered my own question. Decided to call the supplier, didn't know if I'd get an answer on a Saturday) and they said they'd been using it w/ absolutely no problems whatsoever, and that the aluminum stories were bunk. Which makes me wonder just where they came from... might have to track those down a bit... the ease of use of WipeOut and similar products, local stores stock the Outers foam) is great, but about the last thing I want is a gas system going tits up on a Service Rifle in the middle of a rapid fire string in a Leg match...

Thanks,

Monte

Has anyone tried this stuff on cartridge cases to remove the carbon build up inside the cases? If so, what were the results?

Thanks,
George
