winchester 69

just picked up a Winchester 69 that will need A LOT of TLC--I mean a lot! does anyone out there have any experience with this rifle? will the 69A parts fit to the regular model 69? I will basically have to completely redo the whole thing--a bent 2 inch carriage bolt is in place of the original bolt handle--so that is the kind of shape the rifle is in--but I can salvage it--I think.

I'm sorry to not have more info to offer you as far as compatibility of parts, but I thought I would share a picture of my refinished 69A.

I learned to shoot with a 69A. It is one squirrel killing machine. I refinished one a couple of years ago that was in terrible condition. I polished the bolt, trigger and trigger guard to match my fathers "newer" grooved target model and put a period correct 4X Unertl on it. I think it turned out nicely. It is a fun little rifle.

Good luck with your project. The parts are out there, so you should be able to get it back in good shape. I'd like to see some pictures if you are willing to share.

they are a great rifle, try Numeric arms for parts, they are among the best source I know of.

IIRC the 69 is different from the 69a, I think its the bolt that is different. I knew I could swap the bolt from my 75 and 69a. Try outback gun parts for any parts and questions you need. I bought a new bolt sleeve for my 75 from him that was an exact match of the original.

thanks for the replies. I have done a little research on this rifle. they are sure sharp when they are in good condition. I am going to have to do something about the barrel for sure. about 2 inches from the muzzle, there is some significant rust in the bore. after some extensive cleaning and scrubbing with JB, it is still there. I think I might take it out and fire off a few rounds to see what that does, otherwise I will have to cut it off and recrown. I see numrich and classicfirearms&parts has stocks for the win 75 that will work. outback gun parts has a bolt handle that I can get. I will have to get some win 52 mags to go along with it as well, along with many other parts

I have a 69, I am not sure how to post pics anymore, I could figure it out. the one that ryanjay11 posted has chrome trigger guard and clip mount , mine doesnt but that looks the same the end of the bolt looks like the biggest difference, mine has a knurled knob at the end of the bolt so you can let it off full cock and it is also the safety. and the fore arm screw is also knurled with a screwdriver slot. the main action looks to be the same, maybe a little different straight behind the bolt, where is your safety?

I have a 69-A that I was given in the early 1950s. It has always been a great shooter. According to the Winchester Handbook, the main difference between the 69 and the 69A is that the 69 cocked on bolt closing while the 69A bolt cocked on opening. This change apparently is what the "A" signifies. It doesn't say whether a 69A bolt will fit in a 69 receiver. Also, early 69 bolts bent down while the later bolts bent down and to the rear which may require a different bolt relief in the stock.

Thanks. Yes, it is the original stock. It was split behind the action near the grip and someone had carved their initials into the stock. I used one of the Miles Gilbert kits on the stock and finished with semi-matte clear coat for durability. I drilled and tapped the receiver, since it was an older model than the grooved version. The bolt, trigger guard and trigger aren't actually chrome. I polished them for hours to get that appearance.

I'm sure you will have yours looking pretty slick in no time. Once you find the parts and time to do it, it becomes a very rewarding project. Mine has a bit of sentimental value to me and it does a number on the squirrels.
