Will adjusting a scope make it go bad?

The reticle is not mounted in the erector cell... it is rigidly mounted in the tube and does not move. The erector cell moves the image on the reticle. I know Pyramydair says that, but they are wrong.
What about etched reticals?
 
Another thing worth doing from time to time is what I call exercising your turrets, carefully taking your windage and elevation adjustments to the ends of their range of adjustments, several times before returning them to the rifle's zero. Some time back there was an excellent article in Precision Shooting magazine that demonstrated that adjustments can be improved by this method. Some time after that when a shooter was having scope trouble at a match, I suggested that he try that. He did, and went on to win a yardage with that same scope.
Talked bout this with my brother in law this evening and this is pretty much his method in a nut shell.
Say you need to come up 5. Go up 8 down 4 back up 1. Makes sence to me as you'd be working the springs both directions getting a more positive track.
Thoughts on this method.

I got to feel the feather light Barrett 6.5. Just over 6lbs with a fixed 6 SWFA, oh and let's not forget about the jewelry.
2 fresh boxes of Alpha Munitions 6.5 SRP brass. Nice stuff I might have to get some of that.
Brother kicked me a fresh set of butler creek lens covers for my 3x15.
In return I let him hold the talisman, I believe he felt its power!!!

Wonder how the pastor felt, me snoring and her walk in out.
'Certain, small group privileged people', are only interested in your $$$. They can overlook a social hiccup. :)

You only go past when you need to make an adjustment that requires that you turn a turret in the direction that unscrews, makes it extend farther out of the scope. If you need a way to remember, always finish an adjustment screwing a turret in, clockwise if the threads are RH. Guys that do not get the mechanical reason tend to not pick up on this and after I explain the method and the reason, and then ask them to repeat the instruction (to see if they got it) say always go past and then come back. That is wrong. You only go past and come back if that is needed to finish the adjustment turning clockwise. If you do it all the time you would end up finishing the adjustment turning the knob counter clockwise, which is wrong. It is not a matter of exercising the spring, it is a matter of finishing the adjustment pushing the erector tube instead of hoping that the spring(s) cause the erector tube to fully follow the turret foot as it is pulled out from its original position. Sliding friction both at the point(s) of contact between the spring(s) and erector tube and at the erector tube pivot can prevent this from happening. Weak springs can also contribute to the problem. The latter is one of the reasons for the so called Tucker conversion.
 
Thanks Boyd,great info. Guess i should take some scopes out an get em exercized. Probably wouldn't hurt to work the exercise into cleaning regime.
 
You sure about that? Ive frozen my fair share of different brands and ive seen the reticle screwed onto the end of the erector tube. These were high end scopes so it may not apply to all

In first Focal Plane Reticles, the reticle is placed at #40 - in second Focal Plane Reticles, the reticle is placed at position #45.

The erector cell is in between the two positions. The reticle MUST be in an "image plane" - the erector cell has no image plane (see the diagram)
