Wildcat ?s

They cut away bolt face and install a cup that is silver soldered in. Then they drill a new hole for firing pin that is tighter. GRETAN specializes in it with fast turnaround. Matt
Oh goodness. Would trying a different primer be first option before going that route?

I'm gonna have my gunsmith measure chamber and gonna check the reamer print.
We fired 3 proof loads through it after he chambered it.

Yeah, I should have asked y'all before trimming. So with new cases (unfired) you say they will get shorter, is there any harm firing them if trimmed .010 short of full case length?

Yes I noticed the lengthening after forming and FL dies.

Well the questions are because I'm new to this and know the best people to ask are y'all.

Should I expect less case growth with a 30° shoulder versus a 20°?

I really appreciate y'alls knowledge.

I am not sure why I have been seeing some seemingly rude comments in reply to your question. That is not what we do here.

I have trimmed my cases another .005 or so shorter than the textbook trim to length from time to time. I do it because I am lazy and don’t want to trim cases as often.

If you trim the case too short one problem you may encounter is a carbon ring that can develope in the neck of your chamber. If a carbon ring occurs you may experience excessive pressure signs. Cleaning the chamber/neck area well after each use can mitigate the risk of a carbon ring occurring.

If you want to measure your neck length in your rifle then you can use a gauge that is available through Sinclair/Brownells. Give them a call and tell them what you want to measure. They will tell you if they still carry a tool for that job.

Good luck!

The case will get shorter? My cases do not have head space; from beginning to end when forming and firing I have cases that shorten .045" from the end of the neck to the case head. For me that is not a problem because I understand why. AND! If the firing pin drove the case forward until the shoulder of the case collided with the shoulder of the chamber we all know the case would have suffered case head separation.

Which is caused by excessive HEADSPACE. Matt

first option would be to post a picture and let us see if its even an issue. I'd be willing to bet you dont have a problem
I was thinking about doing just that then realized the head stamp. Some more testing and will post it. Coming along GREAT! It's far exceeding our wildest expectations.

Guys I can't just stop right now and send my bolt off for 6 weeks. Testing very often.

For now we're gonna have to find a tougher primer.

With y'alls and reamer mfr recommendations we are cleaning with ISSOS and inspecting with bore scope. Keeping clean. Cases are starting to lengthen some, so no worries anymore.

Dusty I have read this post out of curiosity of when the op is going to divulge what the devil he is working on is this some government secret what goes here This is almost as good as the funny papers.

I dont get it either. Theres not a case out there from 14cal wildcats all the way up to a vulcan that hasnt been done and i got a huge cabinet of reamers off of every parent case you can buy- every shoulder angle and body taper and neck length you could dream up- aint nothin new thats for sure! Im even working on a REAL 22nosler not that shrunk down one they came up with

This might be a helpful read for you and includes primer dimensions for most american rifle primers.

Finding a tougher primer, so you can load more powder, with an unknown cartridge is probably a good time to re-evaluate the project, tools available and experience level of the R&D department.
Will read it, thanks. More knowledge the better.

Got to start somewhere, right? So far the testing has much exceeded my predictions. Gunsmith working with me is stunned. Talked with reamer mfr about tests and he's excited. We're trying to find max limits, haven't found yet. Gunsmith thinks we can go more with better primers. We'll see.
