wildcat 'new'?

Any one ever try to neck down a 6.5x55 Ackley Improved 40deg. cartridge to a .20 caliber?I am starting to collect data to proceed, good or bad we'll see.

I would think thats an overbore and would burn out a 20 barrel in no time. Some of these 20's get 4000fps do you need more? My 20VT does 3550fps w/32 Vmax.

What got me wondering about this is when seeing a 22Cheetah MKII cartridge. 308br necked down to .22cal, I will need to compare case volume to other .20cals out there or maybe just pass on this idea.

I would think that wildcat would be way overbore, especially for a .20 cal.I have a 26' barrel .204 Ruger AR-15 that clocks a mean average of 4199fps for a 10 shot string, and its like a lazer beam, until the wind comes up.I guess it depends on what you want to do with the rifle,I live on the prairie in NC Washington, where the wind always blows)and long shots are usually your only shots ecept at night,or when calling.Im leaning to the 22/6mm REM with a really fast twist rate and shooting 75 to 90gr bullets.

Overbore would be a vast understandment indeed. The 6.5x55 Ackley is what,50 grains of powder? IMHO, too much powder for such a small cross sectional area. A couple if years ago I made a +.125 20BR case using 6XC brass. I scratched it because I came to the conclusion 37 grains of powder just isn't needed in a .20 bore, so why not just do I 20BR if I really wanted a bigger 20.

When comes down to it, grain for grain, the cases holding only around 20-25 grains of powder are the most efficient. However, there are shooters that have 20/250's and 20 Dashers that love them.

If you have really want to be odd, do a 5mm SMc instead.

Mike

Yea I see your point on the 20 cal. idea, I think 22cal would also be a bit much on overbore. Ackleys book VOL 1 has a 6mm arch,6x55) with listed velocities of 4100+fps with 4320 powder and 60grn bullet. If this is some what accurate then it's fast enough for me.

Not to be A smarta## but if you do this, keep track of bullets shot. Then tell us how long the barrel lasted! Pete
