Why would anyone put a 28" barrel on a 6ppc bench rifle

I think you will be seeing more heavier, longer-barreled 6ppc around in the future. Mine is an older Clarence Hammonds built 17lb beautifully balanced gun shooting a 65.4g BT at 3530 with a 27" barrel.
The Tack Driver 5 match is just around the corner and I know there are at least a few "match-specific" longer-barreled heavy 6ppc that will be competing this year.....

I am curious why if its within the rules why you wouldn't want to be as long as possible. Especially if your barrel turns out to be a Hummer then there is ample barrel for set back. I just had a Brux in 6 gt done for a prs rifle the blank was 27 I had it finished to 26 inch why waste any steel?

Rule for short range BR is 10.5 pounds for LV and sporter 13.5 pounds for heavy varmint. So short barrels are a must to make weight. And that includes the scope in the weight

Overall weight rules trump everything but there is also the issue of gun balance. The way a gun handles is one of the biggest differences in a good gun and a great one. Not a lot of benefit to bbl length, ime either. Never have seen the big deal with it. I get wanting to shoot at higher speeds and there is a little to tunability too IME. I put more value there than velocity..by a lot actually. Leaving a bbl long for setting it back in the future is wayyy down the list of my priorities. Even so, an inch is plenty for most cases. A panda tenon is 1.115, so call it that but it's one of the longest tenons out there. If I get a complete setback of that much after shooting it out once...I got my money's worth. And yes, I've set winning bbls bac a lot more than that. Guess what, they were still winning bbls, even down to 18' or so. Been at this for a while now and I don't think I'll ever really buy back into the whole long bbl thing again. But, prove me wrong.

30.5 of N133 at 3550 plus FPS. 200 yard score target shot at 300 yards. Was doing three shot groups to see what it wanted and once I hit 30.5 it came together. Made a seating depth adjustment after the first three shot group. Liked what I saw, so I made a scope adjustment and shot 5 more.

Love that tuner! Definitely my favorite tuner, by a lot! :) Sweet rifle!

Mine works better then good.....LOL

Not to take the thread in another direction......I had some crazy
results in the long barrels in .22 caliber. For a long time I used
just 20"-22" for the stiffness factor. Some time back, I had the
722 with a 24" Hart, and enjoyed a tighter shooting .222, and
that extra 75 fps my Ohler told me I was getting......Building a
rifle for grandson Zach, and now maybe his younger sister. Ol'
Chris Mackey has these real long Kreiger blanks, and I'm saying
hmmnnnnn for my newest wild cat to shoot the 52 thru 55 boat
tails.

Nice looking rifle Mike !! Is that one "Tack Driver" bound ??
