"Why must we defend and protect the 2nd Amendment?" Pretty simple -- throughout history, rulers have only wanted men loyal to them armed, not individual citizens who are not under their direct command. The Samurai in Japan and the Knights of Europe, those societies are prime examples. The rulers (now politicians in 1st world countries) are always fearful of their ordinary civilians being armed. They feel they are a threat to their position and power. They try using the argument of the safety of society, but they are smart enough to know that law abiding citizens are not a part of the crime picture. Therefore any controls placed on them has no beneficial effect on crime, sometimes just the opposite.
