Pretty simple -- throughout history, rulers have only wanted men loyal to them armed, not individual citizens who are not under their direct command. The Samurai in Japan and the Knights of Europe, those societies are prime examples. The rulers (now politicians in 1st world countries) are always fearful of their ordinary civilians being armed. They feel they are a threat to their position and power. They try using the argument of the safety of society, but they are smart enough to know that law abiding citizens are not a part of the crime picture. Therefore any controls placed on them has no beneficial effect on crime, sometimes just the opposite.

Officers serve at the pleasure of the President. Enlisted men are discharged. There is no oath to adhere to after discharge.

Then of that number you have a percentage that like me, have NO intent of ever marching to a drum beaten by those thankless bastards in Washington.
They got me when I was a kid (17) and yes I’m a bit older now but a whole lot smarter.

On the instant, one's ability to terminate a violent attack can exist only if one has that ability. I'll just point out that 5-8000 insurgents in Iraq and Afganistan, with not all of them in the field, at the same time, managed to fight 200K or more, at a time of US Marines, Army, Navy, and Air Force to a standstill, then waited out our tolerance for the effort, and won in both theaters. Plainly, very poor strategic and often tactical
, planning , as well as incompetent political leadership for the last 23 years added to the debacle. The US military won't be able to put down the inevitable chaos,and over through attempt, of the vast migrant army being allowed into the country, if we don't do something drastic and soon. Let alone what they would be capable of if even 1% of the population decide on civil war. The illusion of the US Military's might at this point borders on delusion.

That same (for the most part) technology didn't deliver a decisive victory in Afghanistan. There are ways to minimize the effectiveness of advanced weaponry. Primitive tribal goat herders figured it out (against the Soviets, too) and so did the VC. Asymmetrical tactics and patience have frustrated material and technical superiority throughout history. Never mind the intensity that comes with fighting for hearth and home.
