Why no 708's????

In an effort to bring my family to the brink of bankruptcy a little faster that normal, I started shooting
F-Class last year.

In all of the matches that I have shot I have not seen one competitor, not a single one, shooting a 7mm-08. Whats wrong?

When I leave the Pod People to shoot a silhouette match, every shooter almost to the man is shooting a 708.

Why is the 708 not popular with the long range boys?

In F-Class you is see all kinds of cal. Just about any cal. will work at 600 yard. IMHO I would not use a 22 cal, but people do. I shoot a XC 6mm type case, but I think in windy conditions a 6.5 is the minimum I would shoot. There isn't anything wrong with the 7-08. In fact the 7mm bullet is very good one to shoot.

In silhouette the cartridge must deliver a bullet with enough energy to knock over the target. In long range, as long as the bullet flies in a predictable path to the target for each shot, the remaining energy at the target is not too important. Silhouette shooters are trying to strike a balance between adequate terminal energy, light recoil, and resistance to wind deflection. The 7mm-308 currently fits that set of requirements. In long range we care little about terminal energy and not so much about recoil, though recoil is a factor.

FWIW

I have a .308 and a 6.5-08 that I shoot at 600 and a 1000 yards.

It's not a terminal energy issue, or a velocity issue.

Have you ever seen a prone shooter or a Pod Person shooting a 7mm-08?

7-08 doesn't have enough case capacity for the heavy 175 and 180 grain pills which is what will be used for 1k shooting.

Instead of 7-08 people use .284, 280AI, and 7WSM. Not that it could be done, but since your reloading anyways why not have a hotrod!
